GTG: 1883-S $10 Liberty Eagle - Grade posted

A newp that I just acquired. A tough date with a mintage of 38,000. Estimated survival rate of 425 per Coinfacts. It's a shame that many of the circulated, low Mintage $10 Eagles are traded mostly for their Bullion value. Feel free to guess away! I will post the results tomorrow morning. Feel free to post your $10 Liberty Eagles, a truly underappreciated series imho!

Sorry not a fan and not a gold expert in the least. I don't want to opine anything negative that there is some substance possibly covering parts of the surfaces of this piece but it could be my monitor or just a poorly taken photo but the color in many areas seems off. But you have it in hand, maybe another photo or maybe some info would be helpful.
Lightly circulated so I'll guess AU53. Decent looking coin with some light scattered contact marks which is normal for this series in circulated grades. I don't see any putty or other substance covering the surfaces.
Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

I’ll guess they incorrectly crushed it with a AU50 grade. I like the coin & agree - the $10 Libertys are underrated!

Per the OP’s invitation, here’s my fave (due to the 1854-S date):
And, my highest graded one, a PCGS 64:

See Liberty’s hair to the left of star 10 and the eagle’s right-facing wing. Those areas represent wear, not weakness in strike.

Without having the coin in hand it could be taken as weakness
Guess we'll see tomorrow

She's in an old 40 holder. Thanks for the efforts everyone.
The coin was net graded and looks ridiculous in a 40 holder.
So much for grading a coin from a picture................

Agreed. If there’s an issue with the coin - most likely, cleaning - if it’s severe enough to downgrade to 40, why not just assign a detail grade, instead?

I suspect the coin was likely graded in the 1990 time frame. I believe PCGS did not adopt assigning a details grade until a much later time. Offhand, I am unable to recall the exact year, but it was likely in the 2002-2004 time frame. This one needs to be seen in hand to at least to be on the same playing field as the graders. And even that could be problematic given the fields/surfaces.

For the record, I see no signs of cleaning or any other issues on the coin. I think it could have been a mechanical error and the true grade was not entered correctly originally. I am very happy with the coin and gladly added it to my collection at bullion pricing! I may send it to CAC with my next order to the Bean factory. If I do I will share the results.
If it was AU50 it would be fine. As a straight-graded 40 something is wrong somewhere.
Good luck at CAC. Maybe a gold bean candidate.
Not much of a jump in price from 40 to 53 so spending the money for a degrade might not be worth the trouble.
I'm late, would have guessed 45.
Definitely send this in to CAC, let us know.
My 1883 for comparison and it's MS63.
