Seated Liberty Half Dollars/ low grade condition rarities

LeeroybrownLeeroybrown Posts: 490 ✭✭✭✭✭

There are quite a few reasons why I love the Seated Liberty Half Dollar series, but one that I wanted to open up a group discussion around is the LOW GRADE CONDITION RARITY element of this series.

There are many more scarce dates and many that didnt circulate hardly at all either…. The grading and availability shows this probably best for many dates/ MMs.

I think the 79-90 dates are super tough in low grades (G-VF) but there are also others as well, such as the 1850’s dates…

Which dates/ MM’s of the SLHD series do you think are the most “condition-sensitive rarities” ???

It has been my collecting experience that you see the most low grade New Orleans coins.
San Fran coins may come in next but they tend to have suffered more damage than wear many times.
Carson city coins are all so popular and rare just about anything with a CC seens to be considered worth saving.
i have always found Philly coins to be harder to find in low grades than mid collector and higher grades.
    One collectors experience. James

@Leeroybrown . Well I guess i will test how bored you are. My immune system has failed me for the 1000th time so I am homebound. I dug up this old post of yours so I could give you a longer answer than my first.
Here is the thing, I have spend a gazillion ficticious dollars building coin sets that never happened. Seated Halves have always been a favorite of mine so i have built at least a half dozen of them.
The rules. I ignored varieties (ie 39 ND, 46-O TD etc.), I could never see me buying a 70-cc, 71-cc, 78-cc or a 78-s so they were out. I would take a stack of Coin Worlds, along with any dealer lists I was sent and start making a list based on time. (I went with Fine or lower coins and tried to avoid anything described as damaged or cleaned). That idea went out the window with San Fran coins when i discovered there were 6 damaged coins for everyone not.
in 1996 I decided to build a complete date set. I never tried to do the 79-90 dates because I couldn't see me buying them. However, when it came to actual money i ended up buying 90% of my coins in Ch 40 or slightly better, i did the late dates plus i shot for a complete New Orleans set but never landed the 1852-O. To kick things off I went thru my old lists and put together a timeline list. 1 month, 3 month, over 6 months or never got. Here were the results:
    Philly 1 month
    42, 43, 44, 46, 47, 53, 54, 55 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 68, 69,70, 71, 72, 73. 74. 75, 76, 77.
    3 month
    39, 49, 50, 65, 66, 67, 78, 91.
    6 months or didn't get
    40, 41, 45, 48, 51, 52, 62, 63, 64.

    San Fran 1 month

    55, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67, 68, 69, 71, 74, 75 76, 77
    3 month
    57, 70, 72,
Over 6, month or didn't get
    56, 73

    New Orleans 1 month
    40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61
    3 month
    48, 49, 50 , 51
over 6 months or didn't get
    52

    Carson City 1 month
    72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77

If I am stuck here long enough I am going to make a chronological list of my actual coin purchases using my coin journal. I hope it doesn't come to that. James
