The 1870 proof Seated Dollar is a puzzling issue. There were 1,000 pieces struck, but seemingly nowhere near that number were purchased. Presumably, the remainder was melted at year's end, making the 1870 scarcer than several of the preceding issues even though its mintage is higher. The surfaces of the example in this lot display ample evidence of having been carefully preserved since the time of striking. There are no outwardly distracting hairlines or contact marks.
