Opinions needed on this 1833 Russian Rouble

rec78rec78 Posts: 5,861 ✭✭✭✭✭

Hello, I have this 1833 Russian rouble. It weighs 25.77g and is 39mm.
Numista has the weight of an 1833 Russian rouble as 20.73g and width of 35.5mm.
Is this a known fake? I think it is silver, but could be some other metal. Could it possibly be platinum (I know highly unlikely)? What am I missing here? Any help will be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance for any info on this coin. Bob

It is a copy. Beside the weight and size difference, there are discrepancies in the detail.

This is a head scratcher… see if you can get some help with testing for silver, silver fineness as that seems to be the most logical next step.

The big issue I see from the image is the quality of the product itself. There is weakness at letters that are not well defined. I would rather refrain from making a premature decision, but odds of this being legit are not in your favor. I thought it might be a planchet error whereby a planchet for the 10 zt at 1 1/2 R coin was used in Poland. The weight does not support this theory. Could it be a small production run struck over a different coin? Seems improbable and unlikely given the weight difference.

So if it turns out to be silver, it would be really interesting if it were some type of contemporary counterfeit. And should that turn out to be the case, there could be some interest.

Please consider updating the thread once a determination as to silver content is made.

    Good luck with this…

So can we assume it is not silver and the coin is a modern fake?

  • This looks mushy and I think it is a fake. Mushy and lacking in details when proportional the wear, IMO.
