Is there any way to date an early wheat cent? I'm okay with ruining the value of it to figure it out

Place a drop of nic a date over the entire date/mintmark area after soak in acetone followed by water rinse and dry. Let the nic a date work for 30 seconds or so then rinse in water.

  • You can clearly see the 19, but after that, it's impossible to tell. Considering trying maybe vinegar or nicadate just to see, but I do know that those options are not ideal for my situation. Just wanting to fill up my book, I don't need anything stupendous

In that condition it likely has no value other than one cent.

Correct, I'm just curious of the date, not the value, I understand figuring out the date will also be detrimental to the value even if it's a key date

I guess if it's an early Wheat cent then it is old enough for you to legally date it, so I say go ahead.

Thank you for your response! Which way would you think would give the best results?

Best not to mention the VDB when you-know-who is around...

Well, I'd speak to it gently and kindly and tell it that you would like to date it and then see what the reply is. I doubt you have to ask its folks since they are likely long dead. I hope the two of you build a good relationship.

I'll be the first to go out on a limb and answer "no".

Never had success with Nic-a-date on anything but nickels. Silver date restorer works somewhat on silver but not as well as Nic-a-date on nickels. That's been my experience.

Hilarious according to one of the 3 stooges that hangs out here. The reason for the acetone treatment is to remove oil from the coin so that the nic a date chemical can do the best job restoring the date. Repeat nic a date treatment if needed.

Why would you bother to "ruin the value" just to place an ugly, ruined coin that is probably worth a nickel or less. Just wait for one with a date. It would be cheaper to spend $1 on a nicer one than to throw a bunch of chemicals at that one.

Just get an engraver - then you can make it any date you want!

Date looks to me like a possible 1925.
