GTG 1987 Lincoln cent with a funny date?

Got this in a CWR. Really jumped out from the rest of the pile with its strong strike. Something else is going on with the date too.

Any guesses on grade? Planning to submit to host at a later show.

What do you think is funny about the date? The machine doubling?

Looks like Die Deterioration Doubling the way the metal is flowing towards the rim.
In either case it is a worthless type of doubling.

Do not waste your money getting it graded.

Nothing unusual with the date, this is very normal and common. You see this on the copper plated zinc cents, the plating gets stretched under the pressure of the strike and sometimes bunches up along the letters and numerals. When the plating cannot stretch any further it splits and then you have split plating where you can see a ghostly white outline around the letters and numbers from the zinc core. If you look close you see the same thing at the bottom of the letters of Liberty.

The "plate job" seem to be normal , considering these MS69 trueview samples from PCGS:

It is normal, it just looks bad as a strike is all 🙂

That's a really cool and nice coin that I would keep.
That is not mechanical doubling but it is die deterioration. Essentially the die wears and creates "shadows" of the design elements after striking so many coins.
    I would guess 66 or 67 RD.
@Coinscratch submits a lot of moderns, he might have a decent idea.

Thanks and I agree that it looks like a seven and I might even gamble sending it in for a 7+ but I don’t think it hits eight. Certainly nice enough to try out though.
