It's all in Manfred's hands. The president can pardon Pete, but the process only begins with the commissioner removing him from the ineligible list. I hope it happens. Very long overdue in my opinion.
I'm kind of over the whole MLB HOF thing. He should be in as a player just as others should as well meanwhile guys like Mauer are getting in the bar has been set so low by the writers
It wouldnt really make a difference anyways even if Manfred reinstated him, its still easy to not have him voted in. MLB just banned an umpire for sharing a gambling account not that long ago.
Wisconsin 2-6 against the SEC since 2007
The MLB HOF was ruined a long time ago, put Pete in or not it really doesn't matter at this point
What he was guilty of was betting on his own team to win, Is that such a crime? I dont think so. He was probably one of the greatest players ever! Much worse things have been done by players and managers!
It would depend on whether the approach in games bet to win would be any different than the approach in games without a bet.
Keep in mind that, according to MLB, there are not any things worse than betting on baseball.
I suggest reading the Dowd report.
I doubt very much if the commissioner is going to do anything, one way or the other, with anything President Trump encourages him to do.
Shoeless Joe Jackson in my opinion, was a much more honorable man than Pete Rose, yet Jackson is still banned.
No
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
We don't know this for a fact. We only have the word of Rose, a degenerate gambler and known liar, to support this assertion.
And, yes, it's such a crime. Besides the fact that the rule makes no distinctions between betting to win or lose, betting to win can cause short term decisions that have negative long term effects.
I truly do not understand trying to split this hair. The rule is black and white. The punishment is black and white. Rose broke the rule and admitted doing so. What is there to discuss?
Its definitely not as bad as betting to lose, but the argument is that even betting to win as a manager he might make decisions to win that game that make it likely to lose the next game or two. I never really got what the big deal was though. Plenty of players are in the HOF that were not HOF managers and Managers that were not HOF players.
Plenty of players were betting on games too especially before the electronic apps that makes it easy to catch, they just didnt get caught. MLB loves holding grudges forever

It's only a violation of baseballs #1 rule.
The only thing he was "greatest" at was not getting hurt and playing WAY too long.
THANK YOU!
The "in perpituity" punishment for Pete Rose has always struck me as overly harsh. If someone wants to dive into the personalities in play at the time it's really just a pissing contest involving Bart Giamatti, Peter Ueberroth and Fay Vincent. It's always reminded me of my Catholic upbringing and Mortal Sin: a transgressor suffers eternal damnation for a finite sin, the worst aspect being that it was doctrine of a religion that stressed forgiveness. Just absurd.
Pet Rose has been punished long enough for his sins. Despite everyone who attempts to minimize his accomplishments and denigrate his character he remains an important figure in MLB history. Criticizing Rose for playing as long as he did is silly. MLB clubs kept him active for one reason, he could play baseball. His accomplishments speak for that.
Finally, there is something inherently flawed about a HOF that unanimously includes Ichiro but keeps Pete Rose out.

Rose also accumulated 63 four-hit games in his MLB career.
I will also go out on a limb and say that if Pete Rose's ban is lifted he won't get in on his first ballot, voters will want to send a "message" to MLB.

His accomplishments were being a pretty good hitter for longer than anyone in the history of the game and rarely missing a game. That's not denigrating him, it's simply the fact.
It's also a fact that he had very little power, wasn't a good base stealer, rarely walked and he played WAY too long in eclipsing the hit total of a FAR superior hitter, Ty Cobb.
It's also a fact that he bet on baseball games he was involved in. That alone SHOULD end the discussion. It's the #1 unforgivable rule of baseball.
Joe Jackson (another FAR superior hitter) was actually acquitted in court of the charges of being involved with gamblers and throwing games and he was banned from playing and never got in the HOF. No "forgiveness " there.
The fact that Pete was also sent to prison for tax evasion and slept with underaged girls also should stop anyone from wanting to award him any honors.
Pete never even apologized for any of his awful behaviors. He would even brashly sign balls "I'm sorry I bet on baseball" when of course he wasn't one bit sorry. He made more money and was more famous for his problems than if he would have not bet on the game and been enshrined.
Just on his baseball skills, of course he qualifies. That's not the only thing required for admission.
Since he has died, he is no longer being punished. My feelings are we should stop feeling sorry for this horror of a human being and move on.
I think some here conveniently forget that MLB is a business. There are many important facets to a successful business, and "integrity" certainly is right up there with the most important. Without integrity, MLB would cease to exist, and it's not even remotely debatable.
Those rules about gambling aren't posted just to take up wall space. The rules are there to protect the integrity of the game. The rules sternly warn players that if you gamble on MLB, you will be booted out. Clear and simple.
Rose violated those rules and was booted out. Pete at some point didn't give a chit any longer about the integrity of the game, and got the punishment he well deserved. Whether or not that punishment continues posthumously is up to MLB to decide.
In my opinion, I see no plausible reason why they should reinstate Rose. What would MLB gain as a business for doing that? Absolutely nothing is the correct answer.
sports betting is worse than porn , a complete degenerate but put him in no one cares about the HOF anyway.
people barely watch baseball
"put him in" were you talking about Pete or porn?
MLB
Rule 21
MISCONDUCT
(d) GAMBLING.
(1) Any player, umpire, or Club or League official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon
any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has no duty to perform, shall be declared ineligible for one year.
(2) Any player, umpire, or Club or League official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon
any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform, shall be declared
permanently ineligible.
Rule looks crystal clear to me. Two things I see...Rose obviously knew what he was doing was wrong. The second is to reinstate him would set a precedent for any future violations of the above Rule.
My vote is you did the crime, you gotta do the time. Maybe had he come clean early on instead of trying to stiff the Commissioner and lying about what he did, the outcome might have been different.
pete goes in and lets put OJ in and all the steroid creeps too
The HOF is privately owned, its not owned by MLB.
He did more than enough as a player to deserve to be in before his troubles started as a manager
MLB doesnt really gain anything either way. More fans than not think Rose should be in but I doubt any significant number are going to buy more tickets because hes in. There was a big push for shoeless Joe to get in as well.
The HOF however would be a step in the right direction to restore legitimacy to it that an increasing number of fans think it has lost. Jacksons been dead for decades, Rose is dead neither will get the experience. Its just being spiteful holding a grudge and not recognizing history at this point
Its even worse in Jacksons case as the WS that got him banned he had the best hitter in on either team
Wisconsin 2-6 against the SEC since 2007
He also did enough as a player and as a manager to keep himself out of the HOF... That whole betting on baseball thing. That's the deal breaker. Explain it away all you want. Scream at the heavens. Punch a pillow. None of this changes how smart and reasonable people would approach this.
Smart and reasonable people are able to have sports discussions. Smart and reasonable people also dont want history changed or concealed and understand it for what it is. The MLB HOF is a privately owned non profit that is supposed to be a museum of the history of baseball and its greatest players, it has increasingly lead itself away from it for quite some time costing itself legitimacy in the eyes of many fans with how the voters have treated it
Wisconsin 2-6 against the SEC since 2007
I think I've discredited you enough. Rules are rules. You figure it out.
For the Pete Rose fans...

I've mentioned before, the details of the following in another thread. Suffice to say that my Dad who was having a business lunch with a customer at a popular restaurant near the Phillies stadium. Once saw Rose walk into the restaurant with my Dad's words as told to me, "a very young girl."
It wasn't unusual at all to see MLB players at that restaurant, so seeing Rose there was no big deal. But Rose had the gall or whatever it's called, to walk in there with this very young girl, in a crowded restaurant. It was quite obvious what he was doing with her. I don't know at all if that was the girl from the story or some other girl?
But it's like Rose didn't even care what people thought. And he obviously didn't care what people thought about his gambling either. That's who he was. Frankly, I think some out there care a lot more about Pete being in the Hall of Fame, than Pete himself ever did.
Shoeless Joe on the other hand was royally screwed, and didn't deserve it. All he basically wanted to do was play an honest game of baseball, but not rat on his friends who reportedly he knew were planning to fix the games. It is Jackson who folks out there should be clamoring to admit into the Hall.
Rose always thought he was bullet-proof. His hubris was the fatal flaw that led to his downfall. As for the HOF, it means nada to me, I think its rife with those who shouldn't be there. Its nothing more than a who-likes-who club sprinkled with several who deserve the honor.

I totally agree about Jackson.
Also for Rose fans; Pete was forced to drop the defamation suits against Dowd.
I used to have a very high opinion of the MLB HOF. In the last few years, that opinion has started to erode.
That said, I guess it really doesnt matter if Rose is ever inducted. he is dead. he also made much more financially by NOT being in the HOF over the years.
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
@craig44, it has only started to erode in the last few years?? You're late to the party.
They have a guy in the HOF named after a candy bar. 'nuff said.

LOL. I don't think anyone has to worry about this thread being closed, the sports forum is a boring ghost town these days.
DD ?
Can't be. He moved down to Antarctica to live amongst the penguins.
I don't think internet service is available there.
Thanks for the laugh. Good thing I was not drinking anything because it might of spout out of my nose.
Been to the HOF 6 times over the years. I am caring less and less who does/does not get elected. Mostly I still do enjoy the visit to see the memorabilia, cards, on display etc. History of the game.
I've been there twice. Thoroughly enjoyed it each time.
And each time the fam had to drag me away, I wanted to stay longer. LOL
Forgot to add this. And seeing the overpriced cards in the card shops there.
Tourist traps for sure.
It was on my bucket list for things to do but never got to go there and at this point in my life never will !
That was my first thought and I'm sticking with it.
Well, we know DD was a huge boxing fan, and with an Ezzard Charles avatar, and his handle of "Saint Ezzard", I'm in agreement with it being DD. If so, sad really.
Yeah, it's me Al, don't be sad. You know, some people on this forum think that I'm a danger to myself and my family, and that I'm crazy, what a joke. The truth is, I really loved this place and poured my heart and soul into it everyday for years, but it just tears me up inside that some of the people on this forum have such a lack of morals that they can support the madman in the White House. It really upsets me and I just can't be around them. To the good guys on this forum, take care brothers, and my wife sends her regards, she couldn't be happier.
It always struck me as "funny" that a sports fan can eagerly enjoy watching two human beings beat the living chit out of each other in the boxing ring, resulting in immediate or eventual disabilities such as CTE.
But gets all bent out of shape, when a beautifully bred, pampered and well cared for horse, around ten times a year during a race, gets a few taps on their hind quarters which causes no permanent harm to them whatsoever.
I think if Sigmund Freud tried to figure this out, he would have quit the profession. 😂
Sick people need help. Denial is a bad thing.
I wouldn't be surprised if while typing out his "cruelty to animals" rant in last year's Kentucky Derby thread, that at the time he was munching on a bacon cheeseburger, with chicken nuggets as an appetizer. LOL
I'm not responding to judge your decisions, but maybe you'd consider taking a deep, deep breath and moving on from your entrenched viewpoint and disdain for the occupant in the White House. You KNEW that any political comments were gonna get you nuked, yet you chose to touch the 3rd rail and you got zapped. I would venture to say that many of us here, if not all, have at one time or another had to deal with distasteful situations that they simply had to endure and accept. I think you allowed your "hatred" to manifest itself and you simply went off the deep end.
I learned many, many years ago that when I was in a situation that I had no control over that I just slugged it out until it past. Some of my situations were very unpleasant at best. Perhaps one of my worst was during my time in Vietnam. I was stuck for a year, a very long year. I was in the 1st Infantry Division, no more needs to be said. One of the happiest days of my life was boarding that freedom flight in Saigon and going home. There are no words, I survived, many others did not. I made the best of it, made good friends and occupied my mind with happier times ahead, assuming I'd survive those 365 days. That stuff was literally life and death, your animosity is based on hatred of one man.
I could offer other examples, but you get the idea. To have an election fry you like it did is simply illogical. To be honest, I'm very pleased with the result of 11/5/24. Had the other person won, our country would be IMO in a total disaster. You had no control over voters, nor their preferences, its called freedom of choice. When I play blackjack, I don't always win and I accept the fact that I had no control of the cards. My cure for that was to enjoy the wins, and know when to grab my keys and drive leave. I have a self-imposed win/loss limit.
Over the years, we all enjoyed your posts, the back and forth banter, the Reese's Peanut Butter pics, etc, etc. Its disappointing that you are gone, but you continue to reinvent yourself as though we can't see who the new poster is, we all know. At least give this some thought. I think you burned out after posting so much, but obviously you enjoy it here. Perhaps in a calmer moment you might realize that while harboring your hatred, you've lost a lot of friends here.
I suggest you ponder a well thought out OP post to the posters on Sports Page and slowly get back in the groove you were once in. I don't think anyone here is gonna throw rocks. Dump the hatred thing, life is too short, and it ain't good for the heart.
Take care,
Al
Great post.
If you would have left your own political opinion out it would have read as a more powerful statement.
