Home PSA Set Registry Forum

From Marshall Fogel

This is my first use of the message board. I want to start out by how enjoyable it has been for me to witness the growth of collecting sportscards. I was at the begining of it all and to see the changes and the interest of so many of you enjoying the collecting of sportscards has reassured me that I did the right thing when I paid 121,000 for the 52 Mantle 10 some years ago.

If I can help any of you in answering questions I would be happy to do so. I may not respond in a timely manner due to the press of my business obligations; but I will do my best to respond. No matter who you are or how small your collection may be, please do not let that deter you from corresponding.

I did call David Hall and wrote to Joe Orlando about adding regional and low pop cards to the player set registry. I agree that it was the wrong approach. That PSA certainly can list Berk Ross, Redman, American Journal etc. in the regular registry but not in the player registry as no one can acheive satisfaction in completing the player set regardless of grade. Also the obscure cards, as was pointed out on the message board, donot produce enough population to allow for meeting the demand of collectors. More importantly, these cards, high grade and in some cases in any grade will command unrealistic prices. I believe that we should not ever predjudice collectors by requiring them to collect rare cards in any grade to complete a player set registration set where the cards are just unreasonably expensive.

Though some can collect cards as an enjoyable investment, the industry should, in the first instance, be sensitive to the needs of the hobbyist.

Thankyou for the opportunity to say hello and to be a part of the message board community.

Regards, Marshall

Welcome aboard Marshall. Now that John Branca has left the 1951 Bowman set collectors in the dust, I'm sure you are trying to devise a way to sell-off some of those unecessary PSA 9 cards. Please give me a call so I can help you achieve that end. image

Welcome to the board. Since I have been rather vocal in my opposition to the changes, I certainly appreciate your comments. BJ apparently will be contacting the Mantle collectors for our opinions. Let's hope we can reach a reaonable solution.

Marshall - Welcome aboard! Your collection is awesome, and your view points will be respected on these boards. I'm happy thay you have purchased a handful of cards from me, not the high brow stuff mind you, but if it fills in a slot, it is needed none the less! Welcome to the forum Marshall. I look forward to your contributions to the boards.

Since nobody else has asked a question yet, I'll be the first...

Do you plan to grade out and register any of your "newer" sets? If so, how "new" will you go? Do you have a NM/MT 1969 set? It would be interesting to see how high it grades out.

    Thanks.

Marshall, you seem to be the Babe Ruth of the collecting world - great to hear from you on these boards. Your collection is amazing and I would love to hear more about how you came to be such an incredible hobbyist. Would it be possble for you to provide a brief history of your collecting experiences from the early days to today? The people of this board would hang on every word I bet (Lord knows I would). Thanks either way, I hope you continue to chime in.

I apologize for the double post. If you read further, you will understand. I am new to this advanced realm of collecting, and I have to admit that I am extremely intimidated by these threads. I have been collecting/buying/selling for about 20 years now, but on a much smaller scale than the majority of you. I have had dealings with a few people who frequent this board, and I have been very pleased with these transactions. I guess my point is that I am actually a fairly knowledgeable about the collecting of cards (mainly between the years of 1960 and 1990----I cannot comprehend the multiplicity of today‘s market and I am too young to follow the 50s and prior), but amongst this group I feel like a fool. Case in point; I do not know who Marshall is and his significance in the hobby. Obviously this is a large blunder on my part, but the fact is that I am ignorant of this. Again I state that I do not profess to have the history that the rest of you have, but compared to your avg. collector I do have a fairly good background. I guess my point is that I would like to gain much more knowledge on the hobby, and based on some of the other posts I believe that Marshall may be one of the best to gain this knowledge from. However, it is very intimidating to converse with the majority of you. I hope you take this in the spirit it is written and continue to educate as you collect. Any advice you are willing to give, I am willing to listen to.

    LJB17-

Please do not be intimidated -- most of us were in the same position as you fairly recently -- whether one year ago, four years ago or two decades ago. The best advice I have is to listen and learn -- and ask intelligent questions. It will all come to you; you will make some mistakes along the way, and be able to share you new knowledge with us before you know it.

LJB -- I think you will find that the vast majority of the posters here would be glad to answer your questions and help you in any way they can. There is no need to feel intimidated whatsoever. We're all just a bunch of guys who collect cardboard.

Nice to see you posting Marshall!

I'm the one that started the thread about the addition of the Mantle cards to the set. Although I could never aford to collect Mantle (and a lot of the sets on the registry) I love to look through the registry and see the sets that people are building. I would love to see a Mantle set on the registry that included all of the regional cards, but I understand that some collectors only have the goal to collect the regular Mantle cards. I always thought that the sets on the registry should be representitive of the different goals of collectors, and I thought that making two different Mantle sets would be the best way to do this. I don't see a collection of just the regular issue Mantle cards as incomplete, I see it as a subset like the T206 HOF set listed on the registry.

LJB - Please don't ever feel intimidated here. We're just people. Most of us are very good natured and just having fun here while learning some things along the way. Now that you know who Marshall is, you're practically an expert image.

The only person I feel intimidated by is Dave Vargha and personally I wish he would be a little less intimidating. I was about to post a question just the other day when I thought "Man, what if Dave laughs at my post and encourages other to mock my posts as well?". Needless to say, I decided to ditch the post. The whole experience was frustrating. I talked to my psychologist about this intimidation problem and she started yelling at me...telling me to be a man...throwing things. Needless to say, I got intimidated and left the office in tears.

I will continue to try diligently not to be intimidated anymore...but it's tough...really tough to not leave these boards in tears when you're being intimidated all the time.

    Regards,

    Alan

Perhaps I wouldn't seem so intimidating if you actually knew what you were talking about. It's almost gotten to the point where I dread coming to this board because I am thinking to myself, "Geez what kind of nonsense will Alan be posting today?" I know Alan's psychologist personally and he told me this the other day, "David -- forget this whole 'doctor/patient' confidentiality thing. Alan is one of the most frustratingly wimpy patients I or my colleagues have ever had the displeasure to try to counsel."

I was the one who suggested that he start using physical violence with Alan and I'm glad I did.

That makes a lot of sense. I am just saying that I do not want to intrude on your board. I will start another thread to ask any questions I have, and stop clogging this one up. I do admit that I really enjoy reading more than posting, especially the stories of how people got into the hobby and the joy people get from viewing their cards and reflecting on days gone by.

    Thanks,

    Marshall,
Good to finally here from you on the boards. We look forward to hearing your opinion especially on the tough cards in the industry. I value your opinion. Look forward to seeing you at the Nationals.

  • Greetings Marshall!

Thanks for participating in the registry...it's an amazing thing to see what has happened here just in the last 12 months, and see the participation that is making this grow by leap and bounds. It's truly inspiring to a collector like me to see so many other collectors, no matter their collecting experiance or level, communicating and exchanging ideas and information on sports card collecting. The only thing is...it's just too hard to focus on just one set!!! (or sport, for me!) That's why I have a dozen sets at less than 50%! I'll try to get just finish one big set to 100% and go from there... after all, tomorrow is another collecting day!!! Thanks for sharing your collecting experience and knowledge with all of us...it is very appreciated!!!

    Have a great weekend!!!
