I forgot about how important reading about the hobby was

How important and interesting reading was in this field. Not to sound overly corny but, recently I subscribed to Numismatic News and began getting issues. Great, but they started piling up because I didn’t make time to read. So, I took a couple mags on a recent trip where I would have the time and I am glad I did. Thank God because I had a nine hour layover in Panama City, Panama on the way back home following a cruise through the canal. This prompted another search for more information.

I hear BMs talking about it all the time so, I get it. But I do want to share a particularly story I found enlightening. A frontiersman named Ezra Meeker and his efforts to win over the government’s favor for memorializing the Oregon Trial. Loved the story and can’t wait to purchase one of these beauties!

I've subscribed to both Numismatic News and Coin World for many years. There has rarely been an issue where there was not something in them I could do without. Over the years, both papers have become smaller - a sign of the death of print media. IMO, the loss of Mike Diamond's column was a bad decision by Coin world. My bet they will ask him back. There are several great columnists in both papers who I will not mention as I don't with to derail this discussion. I too have a few weeks of unread back issues and have not read the OP's yet.

I've seen a few of these misleading titles. I find that most have been posted on purpose as a joke. I can never resist opening them either and that's part of the joke I guess.

And I forgot about…unnecessarily vague thread titles. Gosh, why not let readers know what threads are about, without having to open them?

Try to think of something nice to say, if that’s possible. Never fails…..

Please Mods close this thread if discussion is going to be about my thread title and not about the enjoyment and betterment of reading.

Does “Despite what you wrote, I wish you a nice day.” work for you? 😉 Or “Enjoy your search for an Oregon Trail half dollar - they’re aiming my favorite commemorative designs.”

Thanks for your post. I too would like to find a nice specimen for my collection.

LOL. If I had my way, every teen in the country would be sent to "Ranger Boot Camp" for a month! They would come out in better physical condition and have a tougher "skin". I will not comment further, only to say CONTENT MATTERS. Each time I get sucked into a worthless (to me) thread by its title, I get out. Thanks to the OP for posting. Get the message?

As soon as I saw the thread title, I knew that someone would criticize it for being too vague or for it being click bate. You guys are so predictable. :D

    Forget about it 🙄

Let me start off by apologizing for this tread derailment, but I strongly agree with Mark.

It's a great thread, but once it drops out of sight, no one else will ever click on it or find it. The forum search engine sucks and unless someone searches this thread out by typing "I forgot about" other people that might benefit from this thread will never get the chance.

Agree, A very good point. I'll add that I wish I could remember to check the dates of the discussion because I've caught myself replying to very old discussions when they are brought up again on the first page! However, I have written before that I have missed a lot of info posted long ago and enjoy seeing interesting discussions resurrected.

To address researching past CU posts, I typed in “Ezra Meeker” in the search bar and my post showed up. I wanted to know and now I do. I also realized how some members get in a twist over thread titles. Who knew?? I did not, but understand why now. Won’t do it again.

I also think it would have been in good form to be addressed privately instead this case anyway. I feel as though I have committed one of the CU deadly sins when all I wanted to provide was a little validation for simply reading a very interesting numismatic story.

It seems that I was mistaken in thinking you would have been aware of the occasional twisting of some of us over thread titles. Had I thought or known you were unaware, I probably would have addressed it privately. I should have given you the benefit of the doubt and I apologize for not having done so. This was a good lesson for me.

I look forward to seeing what your Oregon will look like. Have you given any thought yet regarding a specific date or whether you’ll go for a richly toned one, as opposed to a delicately toned example?

That’s a very good point! I’m probably guilty of it occasionally with the title that’s a bit vague… But people finding it in the future is indeed an issue…

It's not too late for the OP to edit the title of the thread to make it more specific as far as the subject matter.

Thanks for posting. I learned something.

I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.
