What is going on with the surface of this Double Eagle?

It almost looks like a film on part of the coin. I've never seen gold do this, but the coin was graded MS64+.

Putty
It's up for sale on Heritage Auctions right now. I'm surprised they would let a puddied coin go to auction without any disclaimer.
You got a question, you ask the 8 ball.
Is there puddy on that DE?
Puddy says all signs point to yes.
Feel sorry for any buyer….
It absolutely appears to be putty.

Alot of times, it's not worth the time and effort for a common date lib in 64, though this one actually looks particularly nice for gthe grade and it would probably clean up nice. Often times, the putty was applied overzealously for some very typical hairlines that wouldnt have affected the grade much at all. Since they largely trade as bullion anyway, it's just one of those things where a minor discount is factored into the price and everyone just moves along.

@MarkFeld You may want to let Heritage know about this issue and suggest they conserve and reslab this coin or at least warn bidders that this coin has been puttied.
