What is going on with the surface of this Double Eagle?

It almost looks like a film on part of the coin. I've never seen gold do this, but the coin was graded MS64+.

    Putty

It's up for sale on Heritage Auctions right now. I'm surprised they would let a puddied coin go to auction without any disclaimer.

It absolutely appears to be putty.

@MarkFeld You may want to let Heritage know about this issue and suggest they conserve and reslab this coin or at least warn bidders that this coin has been puttied.

  • Thanks everyone. It is disappointing given this coin appears better than most MS64s.

It likely wouldn't look better than most MS64 examples if putty had not been applied in the first place.

Coins are usually puttied to hide something detrimental to the coin's grade such as hairline scratches so it may be downgraded once the putty is removed and an unobstructed examination of the coin's surfaces can be made.
