1880-s Morgan Dollar Varieties and VAMs: 80/79, 8/7, 0/9

The 1880-S Morgan Dollar Variety Registry Sets have 2 slots for varieties for 1880-S:

  • 1880-S 80/79
  • 1880/9-S

Coinfacts lists 3 major varieties, and selecting each one it appears the VAMs are as follows:

  • 1880/79-S VAM 8 (80/79 Ear, Doubled 18-0 Top 100), VAM 9 (Vamworld: 80/79 Ear Top 100)
  • 1880-S 8/7 VAM 10 (Vamworld: 8/7 Crossbar, Doubled 188 & Reverse Legend Top 100)
  • 1880/9-S VAM 11 (Vamworld: "0/9 Hot 50")

VAM 12 is described as "8/7 Spiked, Doubled 188 (Hit List 40) in Vamworld."

My first question is, how does or how should VAM 12 fit into this or is there a reason for it to be left out?

Based on the VAMWorld description, the obvious connection is it should be listed along side VAM 10 for the 8/7 variety. Is this appropriate? Are there any VAM experts who can weigh in on this?

2nd Question: How are (or were) the set composites determined, and should the 8/7 variety be added as a requirement for Morgan Dollar Variety sets?

Please do not use this as a forum to discuss the decline of the Set Registry.
