U.S. Mint will Strike FIFA World Cup 2026 Commemorative Coins

The United States Mint will strike a series of commemorative gold, silver, and clad coins to celebrate the FIFA Men’s World Cup 2026, hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Now scheduled for release in 2026, these coins will honor what will be the second Men’s World Cup hosted by the United States and the largest and most inclusive World Cup in history, featuring 48 teams competing in 16 cities across North America.
The last commemorative coins made by the US Mint about the World Cup were issued in 1994. Sales of those coins were roughly similar to the coins that directly preceded and followed them.
Recent sales of commemorative issues have lately been hitting new lows for most commemoratives. Based on the sales pattern of the 1994 coins, it appears we may have low sales for the 2026 World Cup coins as well.
Collectors may want to keep in mind that there will also be many other coins celebrating the 250 year anniversary on the founding of the United States released in 2026. This includes at least six gold coins for that program. We may have many people purchasing those coins with classic designs over a World Cup gold coin for example. If the mint issues a second commemorative for 2026 to go along with the World Cup coins, that may further saturate the gold coin releases (it may be similar to the excess of issues they offered in 2008). Will we have our first modern gold commemorative coin to fall below 1,000 mintage in 2026? We will have to wait two years to know for sure.

Just remember that all goals scored in games played in Canada and Mexico will be subject to a 25% tariff when their scores are reported in the US.
In honor of the memory of Cpl. Michael E. Thompson
A very easy "commemorative" to pass on. I did not buy them in 1994, and will not in 2026.
