A fun recent pick up…. 1974 Ike Dollar

ashelandasheland Posts: 23,714 ✭✭✭✭✭

I bought this for two reasons, one, I liked the coin, and two, I liked the slab… It’s a Dupont slab that is virtually brand new

I don’t know why, but I really like the Dupont slabs…

A fun pick up for 40 bucks…

That is a neat one. I haven't studied the holder types that much. What makes it a "DuPont" slab ?

This is the best one that I have produced (privately over-struck on a genuine copper-nickel clad Eisenhower Dollar circa 1971-1974 or 1977-1978):

@dcarr the hologram on the back of the slab is “DuPont”. It’s just not legible in the photo.
    Great Ike, Asheland!

Ha! That’s really cool! Those over strikes with dates like that are really neat!

Dupont made the holograms for those holders, when you photograph them it almost always looks like a black square but it’s a really dark green color inside. It’s just a very different type of hologram. It’s very interesting!

One thing about it, though, do not ever put a sticker on it because they peel apart like onion layers… So you gotta be very careful with them, but to find one that’s intact is really cool!

Those DuPont slabs might someday, way down the road, become a bit more liquid and/or valuable when the hologram is perfect. Cool coin and increasingly scarce slab.

There was a campaign by PCGS to get coins reholdered in the DuPont holders. IIRC it was a $10 special reholder deal.
The dollar is very nice - a real gem unc. Pleasing to the eye.

I remember the dealer I worked for sending a group in and them coming back in the DuPont holders. I recall it was in 2014….
