real or counterfeit?

PppPpp Posts: 517 ✭✭✭✭

I acquired part of a collection and the owner showed me a raw 1916d mercury dime and a 1927s standing liberty quarter. He wants to sell them and we never got to his asking price because I told him I would only be interested if they were graded. Also, I wasn't convinced they were real, I didn’t like the mint marks on both plus the standing liberty looked cleaned to me.

I told the owner i would ask the experts on this forum therefore, based on the attached pictures are these coins real or counterfeit?

    27s real.
16d added mintmark? Shape of the D interior seems off in my eye.

    (This is just a guess)
    27s is fake fake
16 is “real” with an added D

I’m pretty sure the “S” is added on the quarter. The shape doesn’t look right and it gives the appearance that it’s floating.
I’m suspicious of all 16D dimes that are raw, and this is no exception.

The shape of the "D" on the dime looks correct.
But I can not find pictures of any genuine 1916-D dime that has the mint mark in that position (slightly overlapping the leaf).

Yep, for sure that "16-D" has an added mintmark.
