1877 Indian vs silver....

Local shop has a NGC 1877 Indian G4 for sale at $500. I have always been attracted to key dates...

OR

Would you take that same $500 and grab some silver?!

I cant decide!!! Maybe both! lol

If the 1877 is problem free, go that route. That's a decent price.

1877 if it has nice eye appeal.

Yes, it is a fairly good retail price for a graded NGC 1877, but when it comes time to sell it back, what will the LCS offer to pay for it? Maybe around 20% less? With lower grade numismatics, it is tough to make money on your hobby when selling.

As far as some low premium gold, I have been buying a few 100+ year old French angels very close to spot around that general price range as well.

B&Ms would likely pay even less than 20%, based on transactions I've seen. That said, a coin like that would do way better on eBay or GC. The 1877 is always in demand, even for low end examples.

That's too low of a grade in the long term for you to enjoy.
I did that with a few key dates years ago. As I continued, I ended up upgrading because I wanted my key dates to have a bit more meat.

So, either get the silver, or save up a bit more for a higher graded coin with eye appeal

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Apples & Oranges. What's your objective? If you like coins, buy the Indian. If you are looking to start a nest egg, buy the silver.

Well, my objective for years has been stacking PMs. But I also changed my focus on the coin side of things to collect key dates and the best example I can afford. I already have an 1877 in a higher grade so maybe that helps answer my question right there. Headed to CostCo tonight so depending on what they have for silver/gold probably go that route.

    Thanks all!

Silver and wait three years....then cash out your silver and buy an upgraded 1877 IHC.

    Quality over quantity always. IMHO

I’d look for something gold at that price point.

Being the key date and being graded is definitely helpful, I’m a little partial to the 1877 Indian cent, so it would all depend on the eye appeal of the coin…

I picked up an 1877. Indian cent about two years ago, a little better than good 4 but still low-grade… However it had exceptional eye appeal and I just couldn’t resist it.

It’s one of my favorite coins!
If you already have some silver and some gold, why not diversify some and get the penny… It’s not a ton of money in the overall scheme of things…

I even got Rick Snow to sticker mine.

I have a VF and think it is a great coin. Silver is just silver. I personally would rather have the Indian.

Thanks for all your comments. I looked at the Indian again and it just didn't reach out to me. Didn't care for the eye appeal and the scratch on the obverse across the feathers.

Ended up buying some silver bars at CostCo for $31.99/oz.

    Thanks again all!

I was going to add earlier and forgot to come back to the thread, but if there’s any scratches or spots, I would tell you to avoid it! So you did a good one 👍
