Sports Illustrated magazines

Hi folks - I have Sports Illustrated magazines from 1973-1979. Some complete years and some not. All are in really good condition. I have read that newsstand copies of certain issues are worth a lot but are subscription copies worth anything? If anyone knows where to get an honest appraisal done or if anyone is interested in them, please let me know. Thanks!

off the top of my head
I would think any with Ali on the cover would be worth something; as well as the one with Larry Bird in his college uniform....
I'd check eBay's completed/sold listings to get a feel as to what they sell for.

I have every Michael Jordan cover ever made. None are newsstand copies.
I know they have value, I'm just not sure how much.

Magazines are tough. Most are not worth a lot, but people sure seem to think they are based on most asking prices. Plus they can be expensive to ship. Flat rate is probably the best way and that is approaching $10 per envelope. i think you might be able to get 2-3 magazines into one of those mailers before it's too much.
The key covers will be more appealing, although not necessarily more valuable. Like cards, people like the first cover appearance more than others usually.
You can find this 1998 guide for fairly cheap. I have it and it's a nice reference book, although prices are probably ridiculously outdated. I always felt they were too high even when I got it new.

Magazines, yearbooks and programs, etc., are, generally speaking, not good investments. They take up way too much space and do not generate a ton of interest.
I think some of them could be worth something depending on what you are expecting. Would depend on who is on the cover. Popular star players on their first cover can have some appeal. Think it could work to cherry pick a handful of the best and sell them. Then as mentioned the batch minus those probably not worth a ton. You could list those on eBay as a batch but the shipping costs could be high and might limit interest.
Where are you located?
I bought as many magazines with Killebrew on the cover (only ONCE on cover of SI), I either didn't want them with mailing labels, or paid significantly less for them if they had a label.
Yours are going to need to be in exceptional shape, and most probably won't sell. A few might.
Sorry for the negativity.
Hope I'm wrong.
This may help......I forgot that the Swimsuit issues are popular as well

On a related note, is there any market or demand for sealed copies of SMR or PSA magazine? I have a large stack of them going back to around 2010 but the shipping seems to cost more than they are worth in bulk.
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
Yeah, I could be interested in the swimsuit issues. 😊 Like the idea of those. Remember when I was in either junior high or early high school it was really cool when those came out. I still have my Elle McPherson copy.
I could be interested in issues with Nolan Ryan Reggie Jackson Larry Bird Magic Johnson Pele on the cover. Maybe some others.
The negativity is really just reality in most cases. Unless they are 60s or earlier, there just isn't any value in most magazines.
I think a lot of people collect periodicals the way you do with favorite player or team. I probably have 20-30 items with Garvey on the cover and then dozens more where he is featured inside either with a pull out poster, feature article, page sized color photo or even smaller photo within an article. They take up a ton of room. i have a lot of magazines in general, because I am a pack rat. The covers are great, but lots of bulk for not much interest.
Sports mags (SI, Sport, other mostly baseball related 70s and 80s stuff, card mags (Beckett, Tuff Stuff, Baseball Cards, SportCards, etc), hobby catalogs,. They take up a lot of room are barely sell, if at all, yet if there is a magazine I want, I can't seem to find one for less than $10 plus $5-10 s/h. Not worth it anymore unless it is some weirdly obscure magazine I have never seen before.
They sell from time to time in my shop. Usually $2-$3 each, Brady, Bird, Jordan, Kobe etc. bring $4-$5. I usually buy in bulk from people who have kept them for years and the wife tells them to get rid of them. I usually pay about $20 for 50 of them.
I'd consider buying some if the condition was great but dont expect see 1 post again. 😊
I have 100+ 1981-85 issues in really nice shape if anyone is interested in buying.
They are like cards. If you have a bunvh of recent ones that have tattered corners don't expect to get much. The older you go and more noteworthy the figure, the more likely someone will accept a bit worse condition and mailing labels. You get old enough and famous enough and there exists corresponding demand.
If you have early issue with Jordan or Gretzky, share some pics. I might be your guy.
Hi. If you have newsstand (non-subscription) issues, I'd be interested in buying. Let me know. Thanks. I'm in NJ.
I'd be definitely interested if they never had a mailing label on them.
What does really good condition mean? Are you talking about NM/MT or Mint? If you are familiar with comic grading it will help. There are some issues from the years you have that are worth good money if they are in top condition.
I can offer my 100+ Issue lot for just $100 and I'll pay the shipping which will probably be all of that amount.
Any more pics?
Now if only someone could come around and do an online archive of their monthly rival Sport...

Hey, what about Inside Sports? That was my subscription. I just liked reading them. Had not considered the value of a CGC graded copy of Inside Sports vs. Sports Illustrated when I was a kid. Plan to send some in for grading eventually including these two, one of which is Sport. Would think that is one of the earlier Griffey magazine appearances. Probably more a PC thing for me than resale value. Was thinking it might be cool to add some of those 70s SIs to the batch but dont see that happening.

Sports illustrated was on Griffey early. May 1990.
