Coin hunting grades from an APMEX $500 face bag of AU/BU Washingtons

Clackamas1Clackamas1 Posts: 1,053 ✭✭✭✭✭

These are recently back from CAC for stickering, only got one. Check this out, these were the best I found but there were a bunch of great coins, many varieties and nearly every single date and mint mark, just missing the 32-S but it had a 32-D. There were a handful of SLQ's, all AU. All from a $500 face bag.

Nice group. Do you think you got an exceptional BU 90% Washington bag or would most be like that?
What percent were toned? How many years ago did you buy the bag?

The more difficult part would be deciding which were valuable enough to get graded.

Very cool. Nice grade on the ‘36.

Nothing is as expensive as free money.

They certainly don't sell BU bags with coins like that in it anymore. Congrats

Nice score. I have no patience for stuff like that. I would've opened up the bag immediately and looked at ever coin.

Do they still stock them occasionally? How much over spot were they?

They have them today, but smaller bags. I was looking this morning but did not try to figure compared to spot. Here is the link, figure it out and post back to us.

Wow! I'm surprised. I don't see that they have any BU bags of washington quarters available now.
It doesn't seem very likely that they wouldn't go through 2000 bu quarters and fail to remove 32-d and the slq's. Very strange but GOOD FOR YOU!!! :)

When you do large volumes, it's really not worth the time to look at every coin. You rarely find much of anything and you end up losing money.

while I agree with that in general, I would disagree for this specific item. 2000 bu quarters containing slq's and 32-d would be highly unusual.

That was not why I bought them, I bought them in a retirement account and wanted to keep them sealed. Now that I am going to sell them I was told they will open it up and count them so I figured what the heck. I also had 5 $500 face bags of AU/BU dimes. Some cool Mercs popped up including an AU 1916-S and a half dozen or so Barber/Seated dimes.

I think this is coinstar/bank finds since there were a ton of mint set toned coins, basically it looks like someone took grandpas coin collection of BU quarters and they ended up in this bag.

Actually, that's not true. When you are paying the staff $20 per hour, they need to find more than $20 value added per hour or you're losing money.

Some time ago a friend of mine bought a mixture bag of buffs, silver Jeff's. He asked me to take a look to see if anything of better value was in there. They had included the 50-D Jeff. Probably were seeding the bag so he would be happy and buy more bags.

Thanks. They only have $200 face available, total. That's quite the premium but worth it if you're getting bu slq and key dates lol

I believe, but there were only a handful, nothing to write home about, I did this last summer so I don't really remember. I would not be buying these thinking you are going to score. I think they sort these by weight and that is how they get to call the AU/BU bags. The Washington varieties were way more interesting. I have a couple of rolls of those.

If you have to pay people to sort coins for you, then you must not have the time to do it yourself. That's why I specified "as long as you have the time to examine every coin".

And APMEX doesn’t have the time to examine every coin, which is why they’d have to pay someone to do it.

You would also have to add "as long as you have the time to examine every coin and you value your time at $0".

I do a low volume. I could examine every coin. I do not. Because it does not create value commensurate with the time invested.

Congratulations on your great score! I bought a couple of those average circulated bags from APMEX in the past and they were truly junk. The average might have been Fine. Most of them were well worn, VG Washington quarters and I don't think anything was even AU.

Definitely needed to use the .715 multiplier to account for the weight loss on the ones I received. This was 15 16 years ago. Maybe their bags are better now?
