2007 presidential dollar dollar with elongated third ray

I have had this coin for years and I didn't think it had much value so It went back in the 2x2 and forgotten. I recently saw a 2007 dollar with an elongated third ray" and doing a lot of research I'm pretty sure this is the third ray only this one does not stop before the arm, it goes from the crown under the arm and out next to the hand and torch on top of that it has a few die cracks. I would post a picture but I don't see the option. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi there. Welcome to the forums.

I do own one of the elongated third ray coins, and unfortunately this is not it. On the third ray (counting up from the lower left of Liberty's head) the end of the ray is extended straight out to the arm.

This looks like a very strong clash mark, where the two dies hit each other with no planchet between them and part of the design of each die would have been transferred to the opposing die.

Which President is on the coin? Do you see any unusual lines on that side? Can you post a picture of the obverse?

For those (like me) who didn't knw what they look like, here is a TrueView image of an elongated-third-ray presidential dollar from our host:

  • Thank you CaptHenway I've had this one for years and a month ago while doing some research I found another John Adams on ebay ( still listed) with the same exact errors on it if that makes a difference

with the same exact errors ...

the problem is singular. there 1 one problem.

it is as Capt described and ikes_tt has shown

both dies hit each other without anything between them

those marks were features on the other die crushed into the reverse die.

in the pictures, you can see the lincoln memorial features on the same side as lincoln. those features were from the two dies hitting without anything between them

  • Thanks IkesT looks like nailed that one and i see the die clash now. The area I was thinking was the elongated third ray is the wide area from the crown and third spike that goes under the spike under the arm and comes out next to the torch on the rim. Here's another one currently listed on ebay for 999.00 the two are almost identical.

Just because someone asks a certain price does not mean that they will get it.

  • I understand CaptHenway that's why mine is not graded, I'm not sure if it worth it and I can't afford to just toss money out the window.

A die clash is worth a couple bucks. Wouldn't even pay the postage on a submission much less the slab fee.
