50 Pesos Mexican Gold

A GC win a few weeks ago, $250 above melt, now less than $125 with the recent run in gold. My first venture into Mexican gold. Good looking coin! I'm surprised the premium is this low even though there was a high mintage through all the restrikes. I also like the retro green label. Thoughts on this series! Care to show us your fav Mexican gold.

That is a nicer piece than most of them for that year. They are big coins for gold, ie 1.20 oz of gold and that is the draw of them - otherwise the restrikes are just bullion - but that one is a nice pickup close to spot.

I have only had this gold one peso - mintage of 10,000 - for quite a while now.

I do like big gold, the 1.2 OZ is a plus. The other years in the series without the restrikes do have a more significant numismatic value. Not planning on adding any more for now,

Premiums have always been lower on big gold like that. The number of people in the US that can shell out $3k for anything, be it gold or a home repair, is small. There is a lot more direct competition and higher premiums on smaller gold. If you can afford the bigger pieces, it is a nice place to play in.

On that gold one peso, when I bought it as-is graded and with that variety, I paid $350, today if you can find one, it can go in the $1,200 or $1,500 range.

Love me some 50p. I trade in these a lot. I'm always on the lookout for 1921 and 1931/0 50 pesos in any grade. I've owned and sold 2 full date sets in the past 2 months. Medals less often, but still a decent amount. Could also use some 200 pesos from time to time.

A 1921 PCGS 64 at Stack Bowers just went for $7,200 last week. I was watching but not as a serious bidder.

I never bought a "Centenario", maybe it could be the time to buy one or possibly trade it with one ounce that I have of the China Panda 1oz 1990 still in the original plastic wrap, maybe one might need to add some more extra bucks, will see. But at least to be a BU and leave it raw and of the early ones.

I knew about the Centenarios back in the mid 70's, if you crossed the border to buy one they were at between 750 - 950 pesos, maybe more but still way cheap, dollar was a 12.5 pesos x 1, but stil for me back then that was too much and also I was not in the coin collection to buy gold coins.

As mentioned here the Centenario is a nice gold coin for sure!

You'd likely need to add about $500.

One of these — not a Restrike if possible — has been on my want list for a few years, for the “wow factor”. The hot gold prices (and other coins that have called my name in the interim) have held me back for now. Someday soon I suspect.

Both Stacks and Heritage auctioned off several 50 Pesos Gold Coins in their recent world coin auctions. The bidding was strong on all the lots. From my recollection, several, if not most of these lots, were auction records for the grade and chased me off from bidding.

A Mexico 50 peso gold coin turned up in a 1950 Rex Allen movie as part of the story.

Rex Allen was the last of the "singing cowboys" following Gene Autry and Roy Rogers.

His 1950 film "Under Mexicali Stars" was about the smuggling of Mexican 50 peso Centenario gold coins and featured Rex hanging from the bottom of a helicopter.

Rex holds a Mexican 50 peso coin for the camera:

  • I've had this 10 peso coin for over 50 years....it was a gift from my mom, who paid a friend who was going to Mexico $20 to buy it.....this was about 1970 when there were restrictions on gold ownership. Graded it a couple of years ago to ensure it's preservation (MS64).

1848-Go PM 8 Escudos. The coin presents much better in person.
