Fractional Gold Grading

I recently acquired a small collection from an older gentleman and lying in the bottom of a shoebox with a number of other coins were two fractional gold coins, 1/4 and 1/2 dollar, both holed and attached to a small wire ring.
Would it be worth my while to send these in to find out if they are the real deal and not tokens and also, does the fact they are holed make them little more than melt value?
I know nothing about fractional gold. Any insight is welcome!
My apologies for the poor pictures

they are both real given the denomination designations on the reverse. Most likely not worth certification due to the damage. The BG number can be determined from coinfacts. The round liberty 1/4 dollar is possibly a BG 200 series and the half dollar a BG 400 series.

Thanks for the reply. It's a shame that so many of these were defaced like that. I'm thinking of offering him somewhere near a melt value if they aren't worth the grading fees.

Try to determine the BG numbers first. Many are quite rare and even damaged can potentially yield a premium to melt. Better pictures will help identification.

Look like BG-229 and 401. What is gold content on fractional gold? Fineness of gold?

  • I think they would still sell for way over what they melt for. Look on Ebay to see what the people want for coins with the hole.

I gave this friend of mine melt on these two, I told him I would explore whether these are worth more than that and if so, give him the difference. I'll have to check ebay. Thanks for the responses!
