Asking (On hold) and open to reasonable offers.

This is a coin for dirty old gold collectors and aficionados of rare-date Southern gold. An appealing coin with original greenish-gold color and uncommonly nice surfaces for the grade. The TrueView is accurate to how the coin appears in hand (additional images available on request).

As Southern gold specialists know, this is a very tough and underrated date. Doug Winter says that the 46-C is the second rarest Charlotte half eagle after the 42-C Small Date. Of the 285 Charlotte half eagles pedigreed to Fairmont, there was only a single 46-C in the hoard -- fewer than any other date! (Source here.)

I am pricing it strong relative to price guides because the guides are woefully out of date. The last 46-C with CAC approval that came to auction was the lone Fairmont example, a nice XF45 that sold for $12k -- over twice the CPG value. If this is a date you've been looking for, here is a rare chance to snag a nice CAC example for less than $5k.

Definitely a tough date to come by. In my opinion, the 1846-C actually rivals the 1842-C Small Date in terms of overall survivors. You have a very nice example for the grade, and priced right considering its rarity.

    Got Crust....y gold?

Thank you for weighing in @CharlotteDude! If anyone would know the scarcity of the date within the series, it's certainly you!
