Hello,
I have received a 1906 Double Eagle, San Francisco minted gold coin as a family heirloom from Malaysia.
It looks like it is part of a elaborate gold necklace, has anyone seen or heard about people using double eagle as a necklace back in the early 20th century?
Appreciate any stories relating to this coin.
Thank you.

Welcome. Is the encasement marked as to gold content? Did you receive any provenance info from family members? Birds of paradise?

Yes, people use coins for all types of things, likely as far back as coins were in circulation.
Normally it's the other way around, and you tell us what story you've been told. ie. "It was a gift from a Malaysian Sultan to my grandfather" etc.

Very common, even in modern times. Do you know that it's been in the necklace for 100 years? It could have been done yesterday.
