I picked this up at the B&M yesterday. Though the real reason for doing so will never be known, it is counterstamped with the date 10/24/29. That date marked the beginning of the 1929 stock market crash, a contributor to the start of the Great Depression. The date is known as 'Black Thursday': https://www.britannica.com/event/Black-Thursday
Judging by the wear on the IHC (it had circulated 36 years by that date) and the verdigris in the counterstamp, I believe it was done on or around that date. This is definitely a 'if coins could talk' piece, as I'm sure it has an interesting story!

That coin would've been 36 years old at the start of the great depression. I wonder how long it circulated for.
I love it.
Probably someone's birth or date of death, but we'll never know.

On that same date, the Mount Hope suspension bridge in Rhode Island was dedicated and opened.

So that is also a possibility.
