Buying a metal detector for the first time

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to go about selecting my first metal detector? I'm retired and would like to pick up the hobby, and see that Amazon and other online companies have things at all different price levels, but could use some help in finding out what to look for when selecting one to purchase?

Minelab Vanquish 440 or 540. You cannot do better for a first detector, unless you need a waterproof machine for the beach.

I’m also a fan of the Minelab line. The. Vanquish models are good machines for a minimal cost considering their capabilities. For a few hundred more, you could step up to the Equinox 600 or even the 800. They’re both easy to learn and operate, and are also water-capable.

The vanquish has served me very well over the limited use that I use it for.

Look at a Good brand name and search for people who are using it for best reviews.
Coin machines are different than Gold hunting machines but there are newer machines that will do good with both.

Please don't torture yourself by going with a cheapo detector... believe me, it's not worth it.

I would also say go for a minelab vanquish, it's a great detector without the horrendous price tag.

For you guys who recognize how great the Minelab Vanquish is, I have three extra detectors in excellent condition that I want to sell. I have two 540 and one 440. Message me for photographs and price, which will be very reasonable. I have a house full of detectors and need to clear some out.
