Do error strikes increase die stress/lead to die damage?

When dies strike a planchet that is too small (e.g., quarter dies that strike a dime planchet) or too large (e.g., the same dies strike two quarter planchets stacked on top of each other), is the stress on the dies enough to increase the probability of a die break? Thanks for your feedback!

Just speculating but I wouldn't think so. Otherwise, why would there be so many clashed dies that stay in service for so long?
Yes, it can. Die clashing can lead to die breaks. Striking a double-thick item, when the coin press is configured for normal thickness, can cause significant damage.
Once when I was over-striking Peace Dollars to create a "1964-D" appearance, I accidentally put two Peace Dollars (stacked on top of each other) in the coinage chamber. When struck, both dies deformed significantly and the collar blew into three pieces. The dies were ruined.
You can see it here (scroll down the the "Die Pair 5" section, about 2/3 of the way down):

@dcarr Very cool example; thank you!
At work when a die would break, my Boss would fly out of his office and scream at the operator and say you can't shove 5lbs in a 3lb bag, what a guy, some time the veins would stick out of his neck, other than that he was a very nice person he just did not like the expense of die replacement.
You are in the position to know.
Of course, every situation is different, Have you ever made, intentionally or otherwise, a “tulip” where multiple planchets fuse together into a metal “cup” wrapped around the end of the hammer die? If so, did the die break?
tulips, the impetus for zincolns...
