Coins in the Cold - Question

1630Boston1630Boston Posts: 13,865 ✭✭✭✭✭

I need to retrieve slabbed coins from the Safe Deposit box. It's been in the low teens here. Any risk of taking the slabs from the warm bank into the cold weather for an hour or two??
thanks for any advice or experience,
boston

Not really coins, but if I store anything in the freezer that is moisture sensitive I take it out of the freezer but don’t open the container until it equilibrates to room temperature to avoid condensation. Just like when you put ice in a drink and water condenses on the glass, things exposed to cold temperatures will experience condensation of water vapor when you place them into a warm environment.

Sgt. Preston, May I suggest using a cooler on your dogsled for the trek home. 😨

Transfer your coins from your SDB into a plastic bag and then seal or tie-off the opening of the bag. When you get home, let it sit for a couple of hours to warm up before you open the plastic bag. Any condensation should be isolated to the outside of the plastic bag.

Nothing will happen just leave them at room temperature for a few hours (this is just to be safe nothing more...turn them around so the air gets both sides). I mean tons of coins travel each day via delivery services such as USPS (warm/cold/humid weather).

If you are walking then wrap them inside a blanket and put them inside a good bag. I have done this and here in Canada it gets to minus 20 in the winter often and much colder on many days as well.

If you have a car then there is no issue just keep the car warm like you would normally. Same thing if you take public transportation they have normal room temperatures.

If you are that worried and you are walking just call a taxi.

If you do this often you may want to invest in a bolted home safe. Your bank seems far away at 1-2 hours as you mentioned back and forth. You can get some home safes for under 500$ just bolt it to your floor (anti-rust bolts and washers). Problem solved for the future. Just a suggestion. Buy one with key open or dial option or both. Forget those cheap finger print scan or other non sens robbers can get threw via them into your safe.

Someday, I hope to own coins that are so nice that I have to worry about temperature differences

Thanks for all of the advice here, I guess my main concern was condensation inside the slabs.
    Have a great day

My most recent purchase arrived on a brisk 18 degree below zero day. i had to wait about an hour before trying to grade (fog on plastic), but the coin is still an 1854 dime; no permament effects. James
