Perplexed Grandpa wonders where all the 2024 Quarters are in Minnesota...

Been a while since I've been on the site, lots of fun discussions out there.

So...my Grandkids and I like the American Women's Quarters. As we all know, it's alot easier to find P mint coins out East, and D mint coins tend to stay West. Since we have Grandkids here in MN and in PA, we were all having fun finding these and then helping the grandkids build complete sets...excluding the S coins of course.

Funny thing though....we found lots of the D mint '22 and '23's in rolls here in MN, and also the P mint out in Pittsburgh when I would visit my Daughter out there...so we were able to build sets with both P and D mintmarks of those.

But in '24, things seemed to dried up out here in the North Country...visited PA over the holidays and we found lots out there though. So for '24 we have lots of P mint but are coming up short on the D coins from where nutty Grandpa lives in MN. Only a few here and there.

Grandpa wonders why...?

My banker told me the Federal Reserve in Minneapolis runs a first in first out operation (FIFO). If they have a large inventory of coinage, they do not order more from the mint. Most of what you get from them is mixed year coinage.

I am not sure if that is accurate as I am interested in 2024 Jefferson nickels. I ordered $200 worth of nickel rolls and should get them later this week. The banker doubts if any will be 'new'. They did say they had a $200 bag on hand. Maybe when I go back to pick up I will ask to see it. I was thinking just a plastic bag, but if a new $200 mint bag I might want it as well.

I hope they are wrong about all being mixed date.

Aside from a few quarters, I haven't seen any 2024 coins in change.

find a bank with a coin machine you can use for free** (usually need to be an account holder) -- this will be your dump bank
find a different bank, if your dump bank id bank of america then use something like td bank. -- this will be your source bank

boxes of quarters come in $500 boxes - order some

    1. always use 2 different banks and never 2 different branches
    2. the source bank doesn't want re-wrapped coins back - big no-no
    3. for bonus points, try to get 2 different banks with 2 different armored cars services - these services have the "coin vaults"
    4. be extremely timely with picking up the coins - the bank may have limited vault space inside - go for same day or next day
    5. the boxes are heavy - if you're ordering 2boxes a week, they may get tired of ordering for you - in this case go to a different branch of your source bank

you really need a coin machine

Yes, MsMorrisine, that's exactly what I do. I'm an old hand with coin boxes, and know the branches that are nice to work with. Some will even order boxes, no charge. Then I take them to the other bank that has coin machines when I'm done. I try to spread my activity between branches so as not to make a pest of myself. I was especially active during the W quarter madness, and sometimes managed to get new boxes of all the same mintage, which would have 5 or 6 of them. That was fun!

That said, I have been through numerous boxes of quarters with no '24s. A few are showing up now...maybe patience is the key, and eventually they will start showing up when they are shipped; referencing DaveWesen on this. Your explanation sounds plausible, and would make sense of the fact that when I get rolls out East it's easy to find all five of the '24 coins fairly easily...all P mint, because they are released differently out there. But I do wonder why it was fairly easy to find brand new boxes of '19 and '20, and also we were able to find 22-23 women's quarters in Minnesota without too much trouble. Change in process maybe....?
