The “Old Missus Keg” Was Not “All Onions” —Cherry-Picker’s Report From 1868 (attachment heavy)

Great cherry-picking report about an incredible keg of coins from 1868 follows.

There were a series of back-and-forth letters to the magazine beginning with the discovery of the keg (location unclear in single issue available), speculation about what it might hold —then the below report detailing its content’s.

Will maybe start a separate thread/poll to see if the term “onion” should be put back in use as a numismatic term. 😊


Apparently 1868 was a boom year in early collecting, with kegs of coins being sent to dealers:
