Classic Coin Reference Books

I purchased 2 long-out-of-date books in pretty good/excellent condition with some Ebay Gift Certificates I got for Christmas.

I bought David Akers' UNITED STATES GOLD COINS: AN ANALYSIS OF AUCTION RECORDS Volume VI Double Eagles (1982). Very dated book but a classic and still has some useful information. As new books borrow from older ones, they tend to cut down on the amount of stuff carried over. This is a way to see the original source for lots of books on Double Eagles in its entirety.

I also bought UNITED STATES GOLD PATTERNS (1975) which was also written (and signed !) by David Akers.

Anybody else got these books ? Both were put out by Paramount International Coin Corporation which is a pretty historic firm in our hobby's history from the 1950's through the 1980's (1990's ?). I'm sure some of you remember them and maybe dealt with them or met the principals; that was before my time, unfortunately.

Anyway...even though the books are dated...alot of the information has survived in book footnotes and citations where the data hasn't been superceded.

Some interesting items that we all relied on in the decades before Google, the Internet, and online auctions. :) Worth spending a few $$$ IMO.

Yes, I used these as references when cataloging U.S. gold coins in the 1980s. I'd think that much of the information is at least somewhat accurate although we have more sales, records and data today with easy access. They were "state of the art" knowledge 45-50 years ago when they were published.

I also picked up a used "UNITED STATES GOLD PATTERNS" and it was like new - but not signed.
As I like patterns, I did find it as a nice reference even though I will most likely not acquire a "Gold" Pattern ... Gilt ones yes but not gold :(

    Enjoy the reads...
