2024 Gemrate Data - SGC now has 30% of Vintage and PreWar Sports Market

brad31brad31 Posts: 2,861 ✭✭✭✭✭

Doing the math 70s and earlier sports - SGC graded 395.6k and PSA 882.7k vintage and prewar sports cards in 2024 vs. 285k for SGC and 727k for PSA in 2023. While this is not a monumental shift SGCs market share in this category is up from 28.1% to 30.9%. I think their consistency will push this share up again next year and they could have a third of the vintage and pre-war market if Collectors Universe doesn’t change something (kill SGC or significantly change SGCs pricing model).

Seeing those stats really makes one understand the decision making behind PSA leaving the vintage grading to wither away. Almost 2/3 of their business is ultra modern and they still control the vintage market.

My guess is modern is their true focus and they're coasting on the vintage, because that's all gravy. Not a bad short term business model, but it also shows that attitude is allowing SGC to crawl into their share.

I wonder if that's intentional now that they own them.

I'd love SGCs operation to remain exactly as it is!!! Best knowledge of preWar and IMHO the overall most eye appealing and classiest slabs in ANY hobby.

P.S. using CGC at this point on vintage is foolish. Probably indicative of the submitter seeking to have a defect slip by unnoticed. Given their slipshod methods odds are that will occur. Only slab junk cards with a junk slabber applies!

No surprise. Bargain price vs PSA, quick turnaround, higher value limit, no qualifiers. Send PSA rejects to SGC for straight grade.

When will the SGC cards retain the same value as PSA? They still tend to be almost a point behind in value.

For those like me who " buy the card, not the flip", I hope never.

Unfortunately & Logically there may be overdue recognition for SGC that will bridge the gap a bit :( aka The Secret will be out.

I have sold some lower grade stars for prices above the psa prices based on centering. And i think they show better.

Overall SGC will never be more than PSA or not for at least 20 or more years unless PSA does something criminal in the mean time.

The Registry makes a big difference. And SGC will never be able to duplicate it without allowing special price grading. PSA used to have $3 grading to 4 sharp, Fritsch and several others, to get the inventory for people to be able to do set registry's. I believe at one point they would only encapsulate the 10's for $3 and charge $2 for a non 10 not encapsulated.

Thus you see difference in 1987 Topps Nolan ryan pop's for PSA vs all the others. 1989 Griffey vs all the others. Staggering differences. at $15 no one will grade 1979 topps commons, heck if it's not a 9 it's not worth it for the superstar cards.

@Cakes It depends on the era and the grade. For pre-war there is little difference. For 70s there is a huge difference. Midgrade 50s and 60s HOFers are actually pretty close. I think the larger increase in high grade is because of the registry. Good for me because I can buy SGC at a discount.

I like SGC, always have, and I agree with 90% of what everyone has said on the thread.

My last sub was random years,1972 - 2020. I had a 2018 Topps Chrome #150 Shohei Ohtani Xfractor grade a 9.5 and after doing research I realized that similar ones graded via PSA went for more money. Should I send to PSA?

And the old SGC at 12.00 we used to enjoy or observe seems stuck at 15.00.
Guys keep talking about it will make it 18.00 and PSA 22.00
Enjoy your second best at top prices.

Therein lies the problem. Shorter TATs and superior physical slab are nice but if price goes up most of the incentive is lost.

But here is something to consider when looking at EBAY for a price guide. When auctioning graded cards, PSA has huge superiority over the other competitors for sports cards. So when you see SGC cards go for lower amounts in auctions, it mostly has to do with the number of eyes on the auction. i never auction anything and I get decent comps on my SGC cards.

Most of the time, at least on vintage, the SGC 9.5 is superior to a PSA 9 IN VALUE.
