I've recently come across a $10 National Bank Note issued by the People's National Bank of Fairmont, West Virginia, dated Jan. 10, 1910 with S 9645 printed in blue twice on the front, ornate green back of a standing female Liberty-like figure, serial number H723764D. The signatures look to be Richard Hull and J.M. Brownfield. Although I've been a coin dealer for decades, I'm a rank amateur in paper money. I would grade the bill pretty rough, VG or so, with four folds but no pinholes and a bit of fraying at center top, also not very well trimmed. I would appreciate any info regarding rarity or approximate value. Thanks and kind regards, George / VDB Coins

Fifty-six large size notes have been reported on this bank, with five of those $10 plain backs and three $10 date backs. Despite the scarcity, the grade and state are not popular. Without a photo, I would value the note at $100-$150.

It's in somewhat better condition than described. I'd grade it as a solid fine with claims to VF20. A tiny bit of rust? is noted at each end on the back which may not be significant enough to note on the holder. It's reasonably well centered and with good signatures. The edge roughness can be excused as it's not too bad and these were cut by hand at the bank and it's cut slightly askew with trim very slightly affecting the margins. That's a minor problem. Maybe worth a few more dollars than I previously indicated.

@sellitstore Thanks very much for taking the time! I was trying to be conservative in my grading, since I've never studied the finer points of currency grading. Kind regards, George

Well George, old time collectors would have called this note Fine in terms of grade. And if you go way back, it would be termed a VG. However under modern grading standards I have seen several similar notes grade VF 20. I think your note has more than a fair chance of grading VF 20. Usually in the VF 20 grade they won't put comments on the back of the holder unless there is very noticeable damage to the note. While this could happen, chances are the holder will be comment free.
