Happy New Year Folks,
Tonite we had lamb leg on the rotisserie on the grill, champagne on ice, and a Gigondas for the main part of the meal. My job was done with doing these 3 tasks, the wife did the rest. Guests then arrived for the New Year’s Celebration dinner. So I now have time to write up a 2024 review of my numismatic pursuits prior to going off to a celebration at another friends house in 30 minutes. Busy times.

So here were my experiences in numismatics in 2024:

  1. I started a coin buisness. Something I always wanted to do and waited until I retired from my job as a scientist pursuing answers for questions about how the Earth and the Solar System were made and examining Earth’s climate in the past through the clues left behind in geological samples. That took all of my time until retirement in 2022. In 2023 I spent the year researching out how to do a buis, taxes, buying and selling, website design, deciding what my goals were for the buis, etc. The buying then began in 2024 and the first selling event for me was having a Table at CSNS in May. It went better than I could have imagined and it was a total blast. I then focused on bringing up the website. It was the first time I ever built a website from scratch. ’twas quite an experience but I got the website I wanted with the presentation for my product I desired, just before going off to Summer ANA. The website is going well. Went from 1 view per week to 100s per week now, and hopefully it will continue to increase. I learned how to write a Newsletter about numismatics (writing hundreds of papers and proposals in science helped…..). This will continue to evolve but the response has been positive. I learned to take good images of coins other than bust quarters (LOL) because I am able to buy, and hopefully to sell, across a wide array of different types of coins. So it has been a tremendous learning experience with respect to numismatic photography. Videos are on the horizon but still in the experimental stage. This has been the best experience of all tasks related to the buis - imaging coins and capturing their beauty. And I am learning all about taxes and accounting, but the latter is easy for me bc I had to keep detailed budgets and expenditures of my funding and accounting for managing my lab and research group. Oh joy. Overall, I have stood on the other side of the table now and have a website and have the pleasure of meeting alot of collectors and dealers that way. Yep it has been a blast that will continue into 2025.

  2. From the perspective of my collecting goals, I got to see more quality coins being at more shows than FUN and having them walk up to my table or simply find me bc I am a dealer now in part (I still can’t believe it but whoop there it is). So my collection in my areas of interest right now have done well. Below are some of my 2024 collection newps:

So 2024 was good to me in numismatics and I look forward to 2025 in both dealing and collecting. I can’t complain on how I was able to participate in numismatics for the year. Now, if only the Ducks win the NCAAF championship, and the Oil wins the Stanley, 2025 might top 2024 for me. We will see………………...

Happy New Year to all and hope to see as many as possible of y’all at FUN!

And please post your numismatic experiences in 2024 that you had if you have not already. Looking forward to it.

Best, DM
