Including "details" coins in population figures

logger7logger7 Posts: 8,620 ✭✭✭✭✭

I've wondered for years why, especially with the rare coins, "details" coins are not counted in the population figures? So the rarity estimates cannot be accurately assessed with all the coins that did not make it as straight-graded examples which are sometimes minor. If you need to do a rigorous overview of auction results on a given coin, Coin facts will not have the details coins but you can go on Heritage Auctions, enter the grade level, and some of the details coins will come up. It would not be hard for the grading companies to provide populations of all coins graded, not just those with a straight grade. In no country are handicapped people excluded from population figures, why should it be different with coins?

NGC does have a details census. For example, go to US coins, the dollars and then at top left will show census or details census at top left. Didn't know they have 13 1794 dollars with details grades. Not sure about PCGS or CACG.

Forgot to mention to hit what type of dollar you want to research. Then it will show census or details census.

A lot for certain coins. I would also think that the details coins would be underrepresented for more common coins where they aren't worth submitting. I can't remember the exact coin, I think it was a near top pop liberty nickel. One of the forum members knew that 10 of the 12 coins in the population just below the top were the same coin submitted multiple times.

Based upon the population data of what should be noticeably scarcer non-US coinage, I don't think the populations are as understated as many on this forum seem to think.

There is usually a big price difference and a usual higher preference for TPG, but by any sensible standard, the survival rates on this non-US coinage (mostly Latin America but also others) should be noticeable lower.

Just think of how many modern coins were submitted and resubmitted just to get the DCam grade over the Cam grade, also the key jefferson nickels reaching for full steps and up one grade. I feel that there isn't really an easy answer to the problem as many people just care about themselves and not others to take the time. I have many labels saved from ngc, anacs and pcgs that were coin placed in albums. Always saved the label to go with the albums thinking that was best, but if it helps to send them in, I would. I tried google but cannot find a specific address to do so. Post these addresses if you know.
    Thank you,
    Jim

Possibly if images were connected to the coins via Trueview or NGC's near universal imaging over the last dozen or so years, matches could be found with the low pop and rare coins. I'd think that many coin doctors look to buy coins "on the edge" of acceptable straight grading standards to get them to pass muster with the top services.

funny thing is ANACS has included "detail' coins in there population report for as long as i can remember. Not like someone has to invent the wheel here to do it. james
