Carter dollar and First Spouse?

OverdateOverdate Posts: 7,052 ✭✭✭✭✭

Following the example of the 2020 Bush Presidential and First Spouse coins, I think it's likely that similar coins will be minted to commemorate the Carters. With the price of gold now in the stratosphere, the Rosalynn Carter First Spouse coin will be unaffordable for many collectors, likely contributing to a low final mintage.

"...2-year period following the date of the death...". 2027 is more likely unless they amend the law, but Congress has to act regardless. Ref

Do they normally sell a $500 or $1000 box or bag of the circulating dollars? I think I will buy a quantity and spend them.

Currently the Mint sells George H.W. Bush dollars in 100-coin bags ($117.50) and 250-coin boxes ($289.75).

You're probably right—gold prices are sky-high, so the Rosalynn Carter First Spouse coin could be too expensive for many collectors, which might keep the mintage low. The 2020 Bush coins were a good example of how these can catch attention, but with gold so expensive, it’ll be tougher for people to get in on them. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out, but I bet the limited mintage will be a big selling point. What do you think?

You can sell it any way you want but, so far, they all end up as just bullion anyway.

I hope they will make the dollar & spouse medal set or offer the first spouse medal separately.

The best advice of all may be to just ignore all current US Mint issues and concentrate only on pre-1934 issues.

It will take an act of Congress to mint dollar coins. The mint has the authority to create 1oz and 1/2oz bullion coins.

Yes. The program was suspended when it got to Carter’s turn, which has now come. They had to get Congressional approval to do subsequent Presidents out of turn.

I don't know, it's was pretty hard to buy 4 x 2 (ms and pr) per year during the program was a challenge for most people. Now to add on to a collection they only need to buy 2 even if the price is higher. Assuming no more presidential deaths.

No. It wasn't suspended - the program terminated per law with the last 2-year dead president at the time another coin would have been minted. Bush 43 is totally a one-off.
