Anthony's 2024 Highlight: 1798 (French Occupational Issue) Malta 30 Tari - NGC MS 64+
Hi everyone!
This is my first post on here and I have been a lurker for some time. One of my world coin acquisitions was this piece that I acquired raw and submitted it to NGC via Express Service.
It is a 1798 Malta 30 Tari struck at the Valletta Mint and has been pedigreed to my very own "Tar Heel Collection" as I just graduated from UNC Chapel Hill this May.
This is the second highest for the type across the two grading services---with an NGC MS 66 sold by Heritage couple years back in the Cape Coral Collection.
However, this is actually the highest graded, to my knowledge, of this variety: the dot below the Bust. This is apparently a French Occupational issue during the Siege of Malta by Napoleon.
Overall, one of my favorites with very little adjustment marks and nice olive-green luster. The luster and strike are strong, and this Crown features a laurel edge, reminding me of the Columnarios or Pillar 8 Reales of, say, colonial era Mexico. Nice sharp strike to the Bust and eagle too!
Thank you everyone!
Best,

Welcome…
Terrific coin… are you assembling other issues for Malta or other French coinage?

Thank you for the welcome! Nice to meet you!
To be honest, I rarely collect European crowns.
I specialize in Chinese milled coinage and sycee, in addition to some Annamnese silver and gold issues!
What about you!

Mostly UK and selective other crowns.

Got it! Those are really cool--I used to own two gold sovereigns---a 1902 Matte Proof OGH and an 1817 Sovereign, along with an 1844 Cinquefoil Edge crown, but sold them during my senior year of college! Great meeting you!

This is so beautiful! Love your strike as well and lack of adjustment marks (or minimal amounts). Hehe the variety with a dot below bust as well! Thank you for sharing.

The coin appears to be oblong.
Is there any reason that would account for this?

Hi there! My piece? I am quite confident it is a circle, haha. Distortion of image?
