1855 and 1886 GB Gothic Florins

1855 Florin

1886 Florin

Which one graded higher?

I suspect I already know which one will be the preferred coin... but I still can ask-which do you prefer.

I will add some comments later in the thread

Both are nice. Toning is thicker and more original on the first one. I would assume most would prefer the second one.

Well, I am biased and a "hater" as I have been trying to get an MS 1855 for years but always just miss out. The later dates tend to be a bit more common and come nicer - so I am biased to the first even though with my somewhat weakened eyes the second appears a bit higher grade.

I like both but 1886 looks has better strike.

1855 looks superior from a technical standpoint, and I prefer the look of it.

Thought I would share my thoughts…

    Both coins graded MS65.

The dates are 31 years apart so some will suggest it is not a complete “apples to apples” comparison. And while that may be true, these two coins illustrate that two coins within the same grade can exhibit strengths and weaknesses that give rise to the subjective nature of grading.

My presubmission thoughts were that the 1855 was 65 with a solid 50%-55% shot at 66. The 1886 I thought had a shot at 65. The 86 has flash and if there is doubt, a coin such as this is more likely going to get the benefit.
