Rickey

Since last evening Twitter has been filled with news that one of the best to ever do it, Rickey Henderson, has passed. Still no official word so far as I can tell. But this one hits hard as one of my favorites. There will never be a player like him again.

Absolutely no way! Please not be true.

One of the absolute greatest and I will always have him in my All-Time top 10.

A quick Google search shows no confirmed reports (yet). Still just rumors.

Seems like it was on a Dave Winfield post too. Sad.

  • Just heard about this. Man….the great ones are leaving. Thanks for the memories Rickey.

  • RIP Rickey!

Just days away from his birthday too as he was a Christmas baby.

Now confirmed, unfortunately. One of the best and certainly most entertaining, both on and off the field.

82T was my favorite of his.

Man. That sucks. One of my favorite sports terms is ‘A Rickey Henderson Triple’. He was simply the best at what he did.

1980T is one of the raw sets I’m building and so far I’d been holding off picking up a Henderson RC. Picked one up today - before demand (and prices) go up as a result of his passing.

So full of action, my name should be a verb.

The Buzzards are circling on Ebay. A number of new listings PSA-9...as well as PSA-9s sold today.

Yeah. My budget wouldn’t let me consider an 8.5 or a 9. So I picked up the nicest 8 I could afford.

And considering I’m still evaluating as if it were 2003, it’ll suit me just fine.

So full of action, my name should be a verb.

When I picked up my 8 today, I was really surprised how big the range of prices were. Some down around $225 - and then ~$500+ at the top end. I have to think that range will only widen.

I was hoping it wasn’t true. Got a text this morning saying Rickey had died from pneumonia. Bummer. Really nice guy.

This one hits hard. He was my favorite non-Pirate growing up. Loved it when I got to watch him on WWOR when he played for the Yankees. I did get to see him steal second in person late in his career when he played in Three Rivers. I even got to meet him twice. It's just a heartbreaker that he's gone.

Collector of 1976 Topps baseball for some stupid reason.
Collector of Pittsburgh Pirates cards for a slightly less stupid reason.

  • My mom took me to Yankees Spring training in Ft Lauderdale in 1985. We were told to wait by the gate where the players parked, and some would stop and sign. Rickey stopped his car, and signed for everyone that crowded around his car. He was very gracious, and made sure all the kids left with his autograph. RIP to the stolen base king.
