Loss of yardage on an incomplete pass?

I've seen a lot of weird ref calls but this one takes the cake. NDSU is playing Mercer in the FCS quarterfinals. The play-by-play below actually happened; First down was a run of 3 yds (44 to the 47); second down was a pass later determined to be incomplete and then refs said third down from the 44 (thus somehow losing 3 yds). I watched it real time on TV and the refs took about 7 minutes to discuss this and never got it right after several tries. ABC announcers were confused as was the crowd and I'm sure everyone watching. NDSU head coach looked like he was going to lose his mind (and rightfully so). Its the playoffs so those refs were from another conference and thankfully did not affect the outcome of the game but this is RIDICULOUS.

Technically, no yards were lost, the refs just blew the call. Those Mercer Bears are the same "powerhouse" that Alabama plays in game 10 every year!!!
So Bama plays a hard game at the start of the season and saves one of their cupcake games instead of spending a month playing cupcakes at the start.
Since Bama was brought up though North Dakota sSate is the Bama of the FCS. Theyve won 9 national titles since 2011 including 6 inn a row and Love and Wentz both went there
The Pac 2 has been trying to get ND State to make the jump and join
Wisconsin 2-6 against the SEC since 2007
WKU, South Florida, Wisconsin, yeah, they played all those powerhouse teams early!!
Whats your point? Wisconsin wile not great is a power conference team thats certainly harder than Akron, Western Michigan and Marshall

What does Akron, Western Michigan and Marshall have to do with anything?? I thought you were talking about Mercer, did you get lost??
Your post was of Alabamas start of the season. Those teams were OSUs start of the season. None of those teams had anything to do with Mercer who started the year with Presbyterian, Bethune-Cookman and Chattanooga

Wisconsin has been terrible for too long. That being said, I appreciate the smoke.
What a dodge and weave, incredible.
As a Mercer alum, it's amusing they even have a team. For decades, they did not.
I was at a Vikings game against Atlanta last week and something happened that I'd never seen before.
Vikings make a Field Goal, they fire the cannon, sing the SKOL Vikings song and some time elapses, including a commercial break.
They come back & call a defensive holding on Atlanta which gives Minnesota a first down and they go on to score a TD instead of the FG. It was one bizarre set of events. I'm still not sure how or why one would get called for holding on a field goal when playing defense.

Yes, it was never properly explained, or I missed it.
Cousins looked horrible.
Pulling an offensive guy to the side to create a gap for rushing.
You should be proud; they definitely have some promise in the upcoming years. Their running game needs to be more consistent.
