Why was this 1835 $5. gold coin placed in an oversized PCGS slab?

Does PCGS honor requests to place smaller coins- such as this $5. gold piece, into their oversized large slab if requested?
Otherwise, if not- how did this one get housed this way?

I think you'd have to submit the coin at the 'Rarities' level and request the Rarities holder.
That oversized slab actually hurts the value of that coin since most collectors would want to send it back to PCGS to get it in a normal sized slab for greater ease of storage. I assume that whoever submitted this coin thought that it would straight grade and become the centerpiece of his collection.

There’s an add on service on the submission form, and I was not able to find any type of disclaimer that there’s a minimum coin size to honor it. I suspect that the service was selected for whatever reason (I could think of several). I also would find it unlikely that PCGS would refuse extra revenue from add on services unless it’s something that’s not possible, or an overlap like Trueview when it’s a gold shield tier.

I believe the $20 oversized holders are the ones that are made to fit around the original GSA hoard holders (see: https://www.pcgs.com/news/pcgs-encapsulates-gsa-hoard-silver-dollar ).
The OP coin looks like it is in a Rarities holder (see: https://www.pcgs.com/news/pcgs-launches-rarities-holder ).
The oversized holder fee is generic and applies to any of their large holders (of which there are several different kinds).
According to the PCGS website, the Rarities holder is only available to coins submitted under the Rarities service level, so that is an exception.
I misunderstood, I thought you were saying the $20 holder fee is only for the GSA holders and I was clarifying that it applies to not only that specific one.
Thank you for the clarification; you are correct that I didn't realize there were multiple types of the $20 oversized holders. I just wanted to add a clarification to your clarification to say that the Rarities holder (although oversized) isn't treated the same as the others.
Thank you as well for the clarification I wonder if they have a minimum value to get a Rarities holder or if they'll give it to anybody willing to pay the Rarities service fee.
Good question. Based on the OP coin, it looks like they'll give it to anyone who will pay the fee, assuming there wasn't some kind of mistake.
