Any thoughts on what would be the cause of what looks like surface damage to this 1853 Cent? Rough surfaces and reverse gouges by ED of UNITED.

Just damage on a 170 year old coin.
Hard to say exactly what caused the damage, probably accumulated over the years.
Doesn’t really matter though, damage is damage.
Corrosion, and random damage from a hard life. Maybe it was buried for a time and some of the damage happened when it was dug up. Just guessing as damage is hard to know unless you were there at the time

Which damage are you asking about? The one because of corroded planchets, Or the hit from what looks like a hit from something hard, or the environmental damage?
Most curious about the rough surfaces on the portrait and fields.
