How did PCGS attribute that awful looking coin with 'First Day of Issue?" They didn't open their doors until 1986.
sealed box? bu can't begin on the 55
Clearly a mechanical error utilizing the wrong label and poor quality control.
My thoughts as well, wrong label used.
I would put that one in my circulated type set Registry. I think it’s great that it says First Day of Issue

I guess it could have been in a sealed bag where other coins were hitting and rubbing against it. Or it could be a mechanical error.
Here are the certs next to it (which are SBAs in various grades with the same "First Day of Issue"):
It's available.

If it's a mechanical error than some done gone wild with the printer. P, D, and S all show FDOI pops.

Personally, I am still on the hunt for one of these...
Thanks, I put in a bid, hopefully nobody is going to do a bidding war with me for this gem 🌞

the conflict f 55 and fdoi bothers me
i know of pre-fdoi ase that got fdoi labels. you just need pcgs' ear(dealer:P), a sealed box and proof of first issue date
if this weren't a 55 i'd be wholeheartedly defending it's existence
Well I guess it's the correct label after all!
Isnt this a more plausible answer?
yes, i'd say that's the fdoi proof, but if that can be opened and closed then all fancy labels are off
doesn't explain the au55 either
if the coin was slightly loose and rubbed against the plastic in the envelope for 50 years, you could easily have an AU
Wouldn't the plastic wear away before the metal of the coin?

Ut oh, somebody outbid me already 😯
Mr_Spud
Not necessarily.
Do those count as sealed? The stamp cancel doesn't need to be done with the coin even in the envelope.
I just checked on eBay and I got a notification that my bids were cancelled and now the auction is suddenly ended 🤔
But I really did want the coin for my Circulated Registry Sets 😢

Seller is probably a forum member or was alerted by a member of this thread.
Probably thinks he's now sitting on a gold mine!
