Hello Everyone
I came across this coin in my many cups of change and wanted to ask if anyone has seen anything like it and can provide a possible explanation.

Looks like a paint job/worked with, fwiw
Looks like a cent that was silver plated and then placed in a bezel which wore off the plating around the perimeter.

Possibly mercury plated, I would be careful in handling it.

This! Exactly. Or silver dipped after it was in the bezel which kept the edge from getting coated, either way, just an altered coin.
You mean the same kind of mercury we would break out of old thermostats and play with as kids?

We used thermometers to get mercury to rub on cents when I was a kid.

Mercury would probably have all evaporated away by now, and not look as silvery as this. Nor would it be as patchy.
And agree it's a silvered penny, plated outside of the mint and not some kind of mint error. I'd also agree about the bezel theory, only with the modification that the coin-in-bezel was probably plated as a single object, and the plating then broke and tore away when the coin was removed from the bezel.
