1978 Topps Pete Rose recent sale.

Can anyone explain why this card sold for $163.50? In the past 5 months I have purchased three PSA 9's and never spent over $60. There's been ample sales recently between $70-$80. Has this card taken off recently?

One of my favorite cards from the 78 set. I self-subbed a PSA 10 I pulled from a rack a while back. Back then, 10s sold for $200. haven't checked lately but I'm sure it's more than that now.

That's one of my favorites too and picked up a 10 (also have a 6, 8 & 9) a year or so ago and paid quite a bit more than $200.
Looks to be a one time anomaly...a PSA 9 went for $60 in an auction 3 days later. Maybe an inexperienced Christmas gift buyer that didn't know the sales history?
There's an OPC 9 for sale for $100 on ebay, that's a decent deal. But $160 for a topps 9 is way too high. I would guess no one paid for it.
Its paid. I emailed the seller to see if its still available and he said it was paid for.
Not a good looking 9 either! > @Yankees70 said:
Did you expect Probstein to say " actually yes it's still here in my pile of not paid for"?

I asked him if it was still for sale or paid for. Makes no sense to not tell the truth. What does he gain by that?
Sometimes collecting buddies can't resist repeatedly smashing that Bid button.
Enjoy the go.
I wouldn't expect him to say differently regardless of whether it's paid for or not.

I am guessing Pete's passing may be part of the driver on this. It is not a terribly difficult card especially considering it was one of the double prints from '78.
This card is also one of my favorites from this legendary set. It happens to be one of the double printed cards. Each sheet double printed one row. So this card is much easier to pull than most. With that said, I'm amazed at the staying power of pricing on this card because of that.

I've noticed a lot of the late 70s and early 80s cards in high graded are topping the $100 mark in "9" grade - not just rookies.
I broke more boxes of 1978 Topps baseball than probably any other year & I had more Rose cards than just about any other - thanks to the Double Print. While there were certain cards that were super-tough to find (Dan Ford).

What’s interesting was back in the early 2000s, prices for mid/late 70s PSA 8s & 9s were a lot lower - but lots of people were saying (to the effect) “Those prices are crazy - there’s so much of that stuff unopened there’s gonna be a jillion more.”
Fast forward 20 years and there may (or may not) still be a ton of late 70s unopened out there - but the prices/valuation on that unopened material has gone so high as to guarantee it will never be opened. And I think that - probably more than any other factor - has driven prices of late 70s stuff in 8 or 9 holders.
Nice comments estang and mcastaldi. This past summer I went to a big sports card show in Anaheim California. There was about 700 tables. My buddy and I looked at every table and we could only find a handful of 1970's Topps baseball cards in PSA 8 or 9 condition. The only one's for sale were a couple of PSA 8 Brett and Yount rookies and one Schmidt and Munson rookie in PSA 8. That's it for the entire 700+ tables. Even non rookie hall of famers (examples 1970-1979 PSA 9 Brock, Carlton, Winfield, Carew, etc) were not available.
There must be a reason why dealers are not selling these cards as most of them are not rare or hard to find.
@Yankees70 That was my experience at the National this year. VERY little in terms of high-grade 70s, whether graded or raw. Oh, there was plenty of 70s but nearly all of it was mid-grade or worse. I found one dealer where I picked up ~40 real nice 76T but those and a Winfield RC in SGC86 that was all I bought.
I remember going to the National, oh, 2001-2004 when it was always in Chicago. You could always count on 5-6 dealers to have a LOT of very nice raw 70s. And plenty of graded available. This year’s National was, by comparison, a big downer for me.
78 a legendary set? That's hilariousl
It is not hilarious. It is a legendary set; it is the year I started collecting and '78 retains a soft spot in my heart. Mileage can and will vary!!!!!!
Why couldn't it be legendary? Everyone's got their own thing that floats their boat.
Why not 78T? It's as legendary as any other set.
Every collector likes different things. I know a couple of people who love the 78 set.
It has two great rookie cards that are worth more than $1,000 in PSA 9 plus the Ryan is very hard to find in PSA 9.
Legendary not compared to sets from the 50s and 60s? No way. Bland and Ugly. Also instead of Legendary why not just call it Epic too?
Wow...you and a couple of other people love the 78 ugly bland set. It must be legendary and even epic to you 3.
I’m a big fan of all the 70s sets and the 78 is a favorite of mine.
SoftParade - don't let folks trash the 78's! lol. Dan did you ever get those raw 78 cards graded?
Personally, I don’t care for many of the 50s & 60s sets (i.e. 57, 58, 61, & 64 I find especially bland). While I appreciate the other sets from that era, none of those cards/sets really speak to me. Because they don’t depict the game I know as I knew it.
Just because a card/set isn’t ‘legendary’ to you, that doesn’t make it any less so for someone else. There’s plenty of room in this hobby for everyone. I like what I like - and that doesn’t have to diminish what someone else likes in the slightest.
I don't love it and never said I did.
1978 was a legendary year for MLB. The set deserves its honorability. I've been piecing together raw sets for years. Big pain in the arse. Love it.
Enjoy the go.
@ElMagoStrikeZone
While 78T isn’t my favorite, it’s up there. It’s the first issue I remember seeing in the grocery store (as an 8 year old).
Something that I appreciate more and more as I get older are cards that capture the look and feel of the game of the time. And at that time, Reggie Jackson was the clear face of the game. His three 78T cards are pretty great at capturing that.
I love the 78s! Especially the photography…seems a lot of action shots in this set; perhaps the most since 73. To each their own but I’m definitely on Team 78!💪
…and as far as the Rose card I remember a kid up the street had it when I began collecting in the mid 80’s. I was very jealous! I remember being astonished at all the hair on Pete’s forearm lol.
And yes I did eventually work out a trade with the kid.
I got a lot of laughs and flak in the early 2000's when I was ripping '78 wax boxes and a full case of racks building my compete graded set. Was told that modern JUNK would never amount to much. I didn't care. And they were all WRONG lol. I wouldn't attempt building this set now.
