Off center PSA 8 1971 OPC Nolan Ryan sold for $2,335 on eBay

I think 10 times out of 10, I'm getting an 'OC' designation on this card. This just seems to be a lot of money for what would grade now as a straight 7.

I was watching this auction and it looked like it was a case of the number on the slab rather than buy the card. I agree it looked like a 7. A good price for the seller.

2 things that will always sell. Any Nolan Ryan and a good 1971 issue. Put those together and strange things could happen...

If you're going to nitpick standards from an ancient grading era, you're going to have a bad time.

I'm not sure what is behind this statement.

I wouldn't expect better than a 6, but 7 could be right (the t/b centering is borderline 75/25). I looked at the bids and there were 3 different bidders/accounts (with over 2K feedback each) bidding over $2K for that card. My initial thought was set registry, but when I looked at past sales and compared that card to the others it looks like it's OK for the grade and better than most.

After looking at the other 8s that have sold I looked at this one a bit differently.

There are only 35 in existence.

    6 8.5's

    7 9's.

if you want one, you have to wait it get one.

There are 597 topps psa 8's. they sell for around $1,850 or so. The $500 premium seems to be more of good deal for the buyer. almost 20 times more topps exist in psa 8.

Very clean card with minimal chipping for OPC but definitely centered high T/B. That said, I've learned that PSA is more lenient with high centering T/B vs low. I'd still expect a 7 if submitting today, but I've seen worse in both newer and older holders.

  • The eBay seller who auctioned it gets a lot of high end buyer traffic. Not unusual.

    Enjoy the go.

OC and tilt. Not very eye appealing for sure

This card is impossible - period. Here are the last 5 8s sold which brings you all the way back to 4/22. One of these 8s is mine and it is a weak 8. Trying to complete the ‘71 OPC HOF set in 7s and 8s. This Ryan is pretty much an impossible card to find strong.

A 9 has not sold since 2016 so pretty much not an option. Interested to hear the opinions on my 8 compared to the other 4.

That 7982.... cert is pretty nice looking. That is my favorite in that bunch. I'm assuming yours is the first one (photo). Also looks very nice to me compared to the others I looked at. The L/R centering is the main issue, but I don't find the centering on 71s in the 80/20 or better to be very distracting. I should be going after OPC Ryan 8s in 71 for autograph before it's too late. This thread has been a good reminder that I have work to do on my 71 collection.

These shots were all from VCP and were the shots with the listing on EBay or Auction House.

Expected a lot worse based on the thread title, top/bottom looks ok-ish to me although the slanting is highly annoying. With current standards for most it would be 6.

I agree with @brad31 that this card is impossible to find period, let alone in high grade. This is card #513 of the 752-card set.
The higher you go in the 1971 OPC set, the tougher the cards are to find.

Another thing to consider is that even though this is Ryan's 4th year Topps card, it is only his 2nd year OPC card because OPC did not make a 1969 or 1970 Ryan solo card (other than 1970 #197 and 198).

For most of us that are priced out of the 1968 rookie card, this is a great early Ryan to try to find.

Again, no Ryan 1972 card either. He doesn't appear again until the 1973 set which is notoriously tough to find centered copies of.

The centering really didn't bother me. Considering the rarety of the card, I bid. And I was the runner-up.

Call me crazy, but I think the Nolan Ryan in the original post is a kick-ass, killer card. And I’m surprised it’s sold for that cheap to be honest.

The price should be at least double, when comparing the pop of the card. 1971 opc in 8 or higher, should be on everyones want list. So few of them, and I doubt there are a whole lot out there that haven't been graded yet. If someone post a star/minor star of 1971 opc psa 8 for anywhere near $100 I buy it.

The first year where you can find at least 100 psa 9's of a nolan ryan opc is 1978, then next year is 1982. so for his first 15 years worth of cards only 1978 pop 135, and 1982 pop 108, have more than 100 PSA 9's.

Don't even talk about tens. it's easier to find a "BITCOIN" laying on the ground then finding an o-pee-chee Nolan Ryan 1982 and down in psa 10.

Just picked up a 1977 opc ryan psa 8 for $175 off ebay. 1977 is really tough due to the back centering, lots of MC's.

Nice looking pickup! - And it looks like a legit centered 8.
