My New Coin Storage.....

OneyOney Posts: 1,386 ✭✭✭✭

Bought this new Gerstner hobby/toolbox combination for storing coins and keeping them organized. Solid wood with felt trays lining, lockable. Anyone else use these tool chests? Any concerns about storing coins in them?Excellent quality bought them on Wayfair.

Looks very nice! There have been a few threads here over the years whereby a few posters have expressed concerns about gases from them toning coins.

    Here's one:

That is a machinists tool box. I wouldn't keep my coins in that because of the chemicals used to make it

  • That looks awesome! I’d love one of those. I don’t have anything valuable enough to worry about the outgassing, so it would work for me. 😄

I asked AI about these concerns. Toning is caused by sulfur-based chemicals. Since the coins are PCGS certified and encapsulated, AI thinks they should be safe in a Gerstner Toolbox....it appears to have access to the specs around the boxes and states as long as the boxes are kept in a dry environment, they should work for storage purposes without posing a threat to white silver coins in PCGS holders. Thoughts?

  • I converted an old secretary's desk to a coin cabinet (oak) lined the trays with felt. I have raw coins slabbed coins and misc.
I haven't had any problem with toning even on silver rounds. I should check some of the lower compartments.
I live in a dry climate though. I might not want a wood cabinet if I lived in an area with high constant humidity.

Nice. Let's see it filled up!

As others have said, off-gassing would be the only concern.

As you look at the tool box, on the left side, on the table, is that rubber foam tray liner material? If it is, you do not want that near any of your slabbed coins. It reacts with PCGS plastic in a bad way. It will etch milk like spots into the plastic. That is my PSA for the day. I have pics of the damage that stuff causes. Except they are on another computer. I can post them later.

The tool box is nice. You shouldn't have problems with slabbed coins. For raw coins you may want to put silver bullion coins naked in some of the drawers and see if they start to tone quickly. I got a free used blueprint file cabinet from a customer I did work for, that thing off gassed for months. I finally had to wash it down. Raw bullion toned quickly and US Mint proof sets started toning gold.
