Something new on Ebay

alaura22alaura22 Posts: 3,253 ✭✭✭✭✭

I bid on a coin tonight on Ebay and won it. After I won I was going to wait to pay so I could buy a few more coins so I could use PayPal Credit.
When I checked my email it had one from Ebay saying that the item I won was in automatic payment! It had a count down for 1 hour, if you don't pay it will automatically charge whatever account you have set.
This is BS, it never said anything on the auction listing by the seller about this. If I knew I would never have bid on the item.
AND
In another auction I found out the hard way that the seller doesn't accept Paypal Credit for payment! Again, there is no way you can see this information on the listing and it's too late after you win the coin
Can anyone shed some light on this?
I'm to the point I won't bid anymore on Ebay, always putting something in to make it tough for buyers.

Not sure they go out of their way to help sellers either... most changes are designed to help eBay.

I absolutely hate that. Ebay has done so much to ruin what was once a great platform.

I think it's a seller option in most cases. When you folks sell things on ebay or BST, you set the terms. Why shouldn't sellers have the option of setting terms? There are non-payers out there.

I experienced that feature the last time I won an auction. It saved me a step. When someone bids on an item they are committing to buy it at that price, so I guess I don’t see any issue with it.

That same exact thing happened to me. I was going to use paypal credit.
I bought the item, clicked on paypal and the next thing I know my debit card is charged. Now I have to explain this to my wife.

When I make an offer I always use auto pay if offer accepted. I don’t have any issue with that since I make the offer.

The same thing happened to me, only it accidently put me into overdraft on my coin bank account. I use PayPal Credit and only put money in my coin account when I’m going to make a payment. Because that happened, I tried to turn off autopay on eBay but couldn’t figure out how to do so. So I googled how to, and I read that you could easily disable autopay in your PayPal account. So I did that and it works great. Now if I win an auction that was set up to autopay, I get a notification that I had a payment error and the item I won shows up in my cart like it used to be. Ever since, I’m able to pay with PayPal Credit just like I’m used to doing so worked great.

Ok Tim, How do you do that on Paypal?
I'll do it as soon as you walk me through it
    Thanks

Why would a seller not allow Paypal credit? It's all the same to the seller, right?

    Found it:
Amendments to the PayPal User Agreement
    Effective January 13, 2025:

The fees PayPal business accounts pay for receiving transactions are being updated for certain Payment Types, as follows:
PayPal Pay Later options. PayPal business accounts, when acting as sellers, will be charged a standard domestic rate of 4.99% plus a fixed fee per transaction when a buyer uses a PayPal Pay Later option to fund their purchase, including when the purchase occurs through PayPal’s Invoicing service.
If desired, PayPal business accounts can opt out of PayPal Pay Later option availability by logging in to their account with PayPal and going to the Pay Later section of their Account Settings.**** If a PayPal business account holder chooses to opt out in this manner, PayPal Pay Later options will not be available to that account holder’s buyers at PayPal Checkout.
For more information about PayPal Pay Later options generally, visit: https://www.paypal.com/us/business/accept-payments/checkout/installments

Alternative Payment Method(s). The standard domestic rate for Alternative Payment Method (APM) transactions will be 2.89% plus an updated fixed fee per transaction. At this time, there is no change to fees for APM transactions when the purchase occurs through PayPal’s Invoicing service or to fees for APM transactions through Pay Links and Buttons.

Advanced Credit and Debit Card Payments. The standard domestic rate for Advanced Credit and Debit Card Payment transactions will be 2.89% plus an updated fixed fee per transaction. The domestic charity rate for Advanced Credit and Debit Card Payment transactions will be 2.19% plus an updated fixed fee per transaction. At this time, there is no change to fees for Advanced Credit and Debit Card Payment transactions on the Interchange Plus Plus fee structure.

Virtual Terminal. The standard domestic rate for Virtual Terminal transactions will be 3.39% plus an updated fixed fee per transaction. The domestic charity rate for Virtual Terminal transactions will be 2.69% plus an updated fixed fee per transaction.

The updated pricing listed above will result in fee increases for some transactions. You can preview the Merchant Fees Page below that will be effective following such changes. The preview also includes the updated fixed fees for the above listed Payment Types in all available currencies. At this time, there is no change to the additional percentage-based fee for international transactions.

OK, but as a seller on ebay, the payments are processed by ebay and ebay accepts paypal, not me. My ebay payouts come from ebay. Where does ebay say that it's passing along these fees?

According to the ebay message boards, Paypal itself restricts the use of PayPal credit for certain transactions, not ebay.

Why would a seller NOT want to accept Paypal Credit? It's money just like from any other source.

The sellers do NOT forbid it. Ebay and/or PayPal do under certain conditions.

Happened to me once but it was on an auction I made an offer for. Seller accepted and immediately charged my CC. Unfortunately it was my company CC and I had to make it right. I went into settings and marked my preferred payment. Problem solved for next time.

And hope the seller is responsible and responsive and honorable.

I see no reason to trust off-ebay sellers more than I trust ebay sellers. There is also no reason to think the terms are better when there is no supervision of the seller.

So you are upset that you agreed to buy something and they wanted to get paid? I should try that at the grocery store next time I go.

I contacted both sellers on Ebay,
The one that doesn't take Paypal Credit says he was not aware of it and said he would go and try to add it as a payment option.
The one that had automatic payment claims that he didn't do it and that ebay must have. I told him that he should go back to his settings on his auctions to see if there was a switch on for automatic payments, no response yet

I dont think the auto pay is the seller. I think that is ebay. I have not seen that as an option when listing coins.

It's a general account setting not a specific item by item choice. Sellers can turn it off.

I did not realize that but I pay right away. If seller wants payment right away can’t blame them. Maybe they need the money to eat.
