Holder chip repair

With all the technology out there, does anyone know of someone who can competently repair a chip missing from a slab? Make it look mostly like it didn’t happen?

I don't know of anybody who could repair it.

The grading company would be happy to reholder it for you.
This is what most collectors do.

It would depend on the size and location of the chip, some chips may be able to be repaired.
If you had a doner holder that was an exact plastic match you may be able to break it into small enough pieces to put in a hot glue gun and add the needed plastic back.

    Which holder is it?

People would think it’s been tampered with if the chip was too big and you tried to repair it. But maybe this stuff that I bought recently to try and fix a chip in my car windshield if you have just a little chip. Only I haven’t tried it yet on that so don’t know if it really works good.

JM, How about the guy that sold us the holder inserts for the gen 1
    Neal?

It would be easier to just have it reholdered. If you're talking about a rare holder with collector value, just leave it alone. I can't imagine any slab repair that wouldn't be visible under close examination.

The edge of my Doily is chipped. The Doily’s have a thin piece of raised plastic and a piece is broken off.

Wonder if it bonds bonds to plastic

Front of slab bottom left looking at it. Was thinking the broken piece could be removed and rewelded by an experienced person.

    Reverse
I added hot glue (very easy to pull off) to plug the “hole” from the chip in the slab.

You need to index match the plastic. He was 3D printing the inserts.

Any of the windshield repair kits have a chance. They also make eyeglass repair resins.

Are those two different areas on the slab? At the corner and the side? Can you take a picture of the entire slab from directly over the slab?

    Yes and yes
I got glued the small hole on the rear. I was told the slab has a chip on the rear. The chip also broke enough that the slab has a hole (very very minor) so adding the hot glue which pulls right off if needed plugged the hole.

The front of I knew what I was doing…would break off or remelt in a corrective piece.

I know for sure there’s someone out there that can fix this.

    It’s the only one known
I don’t love that the degree of the holder wasn’t disclosed since I paid max ++

I used to know a guy that could fix anything plastic with the different welders and all the different types of plastics he used but he’s gone.

Have you checked with the guy who made your new display case? I don't know how much overlap there is but it seems up his alley or, if not, maybe he knows someone.

the small chips are just character and tell a story of its life in the doily. if it really does bother you then please sell it before attempting to fix/destroy it, as I am sure that there are many collectors that would love that baby just the way it is :)

The “chip” on the rear actually left a small open hole allowing air into the holder.

that sucks a little, but the coin is stable as can be. you could leave it outside for a year and I bet it wouldn’t change at all :)

  • …..as long as I didn’t see it outside, as it would probably change ownership 😂

I'm in the "leave it alone" column. Any attempts to repair it, might look like it's been intentionally tampered with.
