For Sale: 1820 10C JR-2 SMALL 0 MS66 PCGS

One of the finest 1820 Office Boy Small Capped Bust Dime, we are thrilled to offer a mesmerizing gem of high quality, perfect for a top type set, date set or advanced early dime collection. With semi-prooflike fields that serve as a beautiful backdrop to its satiny details, wisps of soft orange gold tones are laid over both sides for an added touch of beauty as it is contrasted by ice-cold silver hues. The obverse stars, Liberty's hair curls, and the entire reverse of this Superb Gem are sharp, aside from the dentils of stars 9 to 13 as they all come. Finally, splashes of green and apricot adorn the coin as it enriches its vibrance.

The JR-2 die variety, also known as the Office Boy, is highly sought after by collectors due to its charming lettering mistakes, which make attribution easier. The obverse of the coin has minor re-punching on the final star, whereas the reverse showcases many errors, most notably the S in STATES and the O in OF. This die is believed to have been created by an inexperienced engraver, an observation first made by Dr. William Sheldon in 1949 and is one of the true Small 0 varieties.

According to PCGS, only 75 1820 10C Small 0 are estimated to exist today! Whilst in comparison 600 Large 0 are estimated to exist. As such the Small 0 is approximately 8 times rarer than the Large 0.

Further adding to this coins desirability, at MS65 and MS66 there is little difference between grade and type because of the confusion of the JR varieties in the past. Some comps are The Pogue MS65+ PCGS Small 0( JR-10) example sold in 2016 for $21,150, and a JR-11 Small 0 MS66 PCGS sold for $20,400 in 2018. Neither of them are the true JR-2, Office Boy, Small 0 PCGS example, as some more aptly refer to the JR-10 and JR-11 as Medium 0.

Today this coin commands a Price Guide of $35,000, is completely new to the condition census and is tied with one other for the lofty MS66 grade. Finer than this example is the Oliver Yung CAC example that sold in 2014 for $152,750 also a JR-02 that is locked in a permanent collection, whilst a non-CAC MS67 Small 0 JR-02 is offered on the market for approximately $137,500 today. As a premium quality Gem, the beautiful coin offered here is a significant condition rarity that is sure to please even the most discerning numismatist. This Superb Gem is devoid of mentionable imperfections, is an important Type Coin, combined with a much desired Office Boy Jr-2 type and as such we can see this bring much more at auction.
