Flowing Hair Gold Privy "V" Die Variety
First post here and thanks for letting me join you all!! I go by Rick @ coinnews.net. So call me Rick...
No, I'm not trolling or wanting some sort of twisted attention. This is an observation that I want to share with you. Anyone can follow up with my observations at the SBG site or PCGS regarding this die variety...
Here we go again, someone is messing around, whether it be the 2023 1C, or now this '24 FHG Privy coin.
In both cases the "V" does not belong and was intentionally placed on the dies to incuse the "V" onto the coins.
Just a hunch, I think Ventris knows about these variety shenanigans, and has signed off on them. However, what do I know!?
In my quest to find out when that annoying thread-like die marker/anomaly(the "black thread" I'll call it)stops, it was at coin #54(via the provided TrueView images)...
Coin #54 is where a new obverse die was installed and where the "black thread" finally disappeared, and judging from the improved detail on the right wing, the reverse Die was replaced as well.
It was at this time that I noticed the "V" behind her ear in her hair on the pre-#54 coins. It is uncannily similar in shape & size as the '23 1C "V' coin...
1) The "black thread", and the "V" are present on coin #1 through coin #53.
A few coins(3 or 4)do not display the V due to a poor strike, mostly coins that were struck later on, but one early on as well. Coin #2 does not show the "black thread", yet has the "V".
2) The black thread(circled in blue)progressively grows in thickness as more coins are struck(see photos), all the way up to coin #53.
3) The "V" is circled in red(see photos)and it abruptly ends at coin #53.
4) Coin #54 starts fresh with no "V", and no "black thread".
As far as I can tell, there are approximately 50 coins with this "V" visibly incused onto the coin behind her ear, in her hair...
See photos below(and check it out yourself via T-V imaging if desired), and see the progressions for yourself...
Photo 1 is coin #1
Photo 2 is coin #18
Photo 3 is coin #28
Photo #4 is coin #54(no markers, new die)...
Thanks for listening!
Rick

I’m glad you are enjoying the new gold pieces, you seem to be really into them.
Mr_Spud
In my view the "V" you marked is too small to be intentional.
Just a strike-through. Not intentional.
I think it's an Omega
A hairy situation for sure.
My US Mint Commemorative Medal Set
I’d be paying more attention to the blue circle
The thread in the blue area could simply be a strike through. The red area, however, certainly does look similar to the V on the 2023 Lincoln Cents.
This is like one of those pictures the longer you stare at it you start seeing 💩
@emeraldATV understands the spectrum of the “rogue V” best.
Rampage says,
"The thread in the blue area could simply be a strike through"
What is striking through? The #1 coin's TrueView image has this black line(presumably very shiny in hand)as a very "thin thread" look to it.
Now, as coin #19(below)reveals the "thread" as a much thicker distraction on the coin.
Is it a thin wire/shaving that was trapped/stuck onto the die, then pressing up against the coin?
Please enlighten me regarding this "strike through" distraction, thanks...
"Strike through" literally means the coin was struck through a foreign objec: hair, fiber, screw.
You can easily research them on the internet using that term.
Thanks jmlanzaf,
I guess I'll stick with my guess as to it being a thin wire/shaving that had a few dozen "strikes" applied to itself!...
What are your thoughts on that very small V down there?
It's very similar as to its shape compared to the '23 1C coin..
Although if scaled accurately, it looks to be smaller than the 1C "scratch" lol
You'll drive yourself crazy with this stuff. 😵💫
The extra V is apparently a recognized variety, but those other things look like die scratches or other noise.
The v on the cent had to be die damage due to the large number of identical coins that exist. Strike throughs are more random occurrences.
Technically wouldn't it be hub damage since it's incuse? 🤔
The 2023 Extra "V" 1C coin has 4 die markers on the obverse, and one on the reverse. All of the '23 1C V coins have these 5 markers(in red), fyi...
If incuse, yes. I'm not sure the distinction would matter to the OP.
The consensus is that it was a modified hub, one die pair for the variety.

My unofficial estimate is that there are at least 3-4000 out there.
Around 1000 TPG certified, 1000 saved in flips, and 2000 going through the re-circulation cycles.
The distinction does matter to those that find it an interesting variety...
Ask me how I know lol...!
My apologies. When you didn't know what a "strike through" was, I assumed you had a lower knowledge base than you do.
I would think the population is like 10x your estimate if it made it onto a die, unless caught early. On the hub, depending on if it when someone noticed, the population could be in the millions.
Thanks jmlanzaf ,
My question was more in line with what was the object that's causing the thread-like distraction on the #1 through #53 FHG Privy coins.
With that being said, no, I'm no expert, just a learner and observer in progress.
Correct, the '23 V 1C has a potential of many, many 10's or 100's of thousands yet to be discovered, possibly in $25 Loomis boxes that are Gem, but doubtful imo. Whatever amount that have been distributed/released(all from the Buffalo, NY area)so far have been searched thoroughly by the CR Hunters locally, and nationwide by the CRH hobbyists, and it continues. The certification rate has played itself out as very few, if any are being graded lately. The cruddy zinc V's are all that's left in the ongoing circulation cycles, only to degrade further as time goes by. Time will tell as to what the future holds for these 1C coins...
As you can see above, I have my fill, and yeah, I have issues lol...
But, I have other pursuits that I enjoy as as well.....
