Nice coin, but $9k?

Good deal?

My take is you have to be a Peace $1 hard core collector.

edited to add: Are there any CAC approved MS66's out there?

PCGS Price Guide was $10.5k now $11.5k

Heritage description:

1921 High Relief Peace Dollar, MS66
Brilliant and Highly Lustrous

1921 $1 MS66 PCGS.The 1921 Peace dollar is one-year curiosity as it is the only 20th century silver coin struck in high relief. Just over a million pieces were produced, and a paltry 15 pieces are finer than this coin at PCGS and NGC combined (9/24). The brilliant surfaces seen on this piece are notably frosted, and there are a few unimportant abrasions present. The reverse is better struck than the obverse with its usual slight softness in the center.

Impressive coin. $9k is not surprising to me.

That sounds like a fair price.

It looks solid for the grade.

Had I been a peace dollar enthusiast; it would’ve garnered my attention.

But will it sticker? If I were the owner, I’d be happy with it, either way.

Oh, I am a hard-core fan of the 1921 but not overly impressed by that. Just doesn’t have the eye appeal for me.

Now riding the swell in PM's and surf.

I have to agree with you, Miles.

It's a very interesting coin, but I'm just not feeling it.

Better question is "why didn't it sticker?" Assume that it has been to the messiah a couple times.

Hard to say for sure, but there is a good chance that you are correct.

21 peace…always wanted one but they look flat /dull and soft strike…usually unimpressive.

Doesn’t the area in the bun of liberty’s hair look like machine wrap damage?

And aren’t there enough hits on the eagle’s leg alone to preclude it from a 66 grade?

There’s been a ‘21 HR Peace MS66 listed for $7K on the BST for a month of Sunday’s. FWIW.

I tried to sell a PQ Lafayette dollar with a similar planchet streak to a major dealer who is beloved by this forum and he refused to make an offer because he said it was undesirable as such. Maybe JA didn''t like that dark line?

A little over 200 PCGS in 66 and probably multiple submissions.

That is not enough to satisfy the set collectors. So demand bids up the price.

Being a recent cert number, of course the Trueview is god-awful with that signature post-Phil yellow tint.

Otherwise, the coin looks nice (based on Heritage photos) but the reverse toning streak is too distracting for me to pony up $9k for it.

The device(s) certainly rise up...but the coin does NOT look concave in the fields like the Saint-Gaudens MCMVII HR. Almost looks like the device might be equal to or higher than the rim which shouldn't be, right ?

Am I seeing the coin correctly ?

I don't know this series well, but the 21 high relief is on my Box of 20 bucket list. Do the folks who know this series think this coin is a 66? I know it's a big coin, but it seems to have lots and lots of contact marks, a couple large, and lots of toning spots (and that one streak). Granted we are assessing the coin from pictures, but as others have said, it also doesn't seem to have that pop that I've seen on other 21s. I know they get it right 98% of the time, but a 66? Asking because I want to know.

If we were all the same, the world would be an incredibly boring place.

Does anyone else account for sales tax in their bid? If the winning bidder lives in a state that sales taxe is charged, they may have paid an additional 6% (unless they have an exemption). Just curious.

I am totally with you. There's no way PCGS missed this, right?

Guess a clean cheek over-rides all else. Thought it was a stretch at 66 but even as a 65, do not like that scrape in bonnet and reverse streak. Seems like the dies were heavily polished and not any brilliant luster

  • goldengolden Posts: 9,654 ✭✭✭✭✭

Just not a coin that I would want at half of that price.

  • SmudgeSmudge Posts: 9,538 ✭✭✭✭✭

I know it’s strike issues but they all look AU to me.

    I saw the same thing.

Look at the very straight indentation at the back of the hair.

Looks like major damage to me.

There’s no CAC sticker so that should explain why most of you all agree it’s not a 66. The coin has definitely been sent and did not pass.

  • anablepanablep Posts: 5,112 ✭✭✭✭✭

I do not like it as a 66 & I’m not seeing much luster for that grade level, considering the hits, scuffs, & unattractive toning streak. It doesn’t resemble any of my 66 Peace dollars from a technical standpoint…

Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

  • Ya can't get it right 100% of the time. The problem is that it is a beautiful coin in spite of the hidden (?) damage, scuffed obverse field, and brown streak. Perhaps we are all looking at it too closely. IMHO, CAC better never sticker it at that grade. I'll bet CACG would have been no higher than a 65. Furthermore, if it were in a 65 holder - I wouldn't bean it at that grade!

The little nicks don't bother me. That's called "micro-grading." Take away the neck, hair bun, and the streak and you would have a solid 66. Agree?
